Auto industry analysts have already declared the death of the sub-$20,000 car in the United States as new car prices continue to rise, and cars that cost less than $30,000 are also disappearing fast.
With consumers paying an average of $49,855 for new cars in July 2026, according to Cox Automotive’s Kelley Blue Book, only nine major car brands averaged sale prices under $40,000 in the United States.
Erin Keating, an executive analyst for Cox Automotive, said in a statement that her group’s data shows Americans are adjusting to stubbornly high average new car prices by moving toward more affordable segments, but even that can only save them so much.
“While incentive spending eased in July, that’s only part of the pricing story,” she said. “We’re also seeing more 2027 model-year vehicles arrive on dealer lots, bringing fresh content, feature updates and higher sticker prices into the market.”
With that budget crunch in mind, we recently tested two models that are actually priced below $30,000, the Mazda3 sedan and the Kia K4 hatchback, to see which one is a better buy.
How the Mazda3 Stands Out
The 2026 Mazda3 starts at a modest $24,650 before taxes and additional fees. It’s available in five trims, ranging from the base model 2.5 S to the top-of-the-line 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus.
I tested the 2026 Mazda3 Turbo Premium Plus, which is the top trim of the vehicle that is the latest iteration in the fourth generation of the Japanese automaker’s venerable sporty compact sedan. Even the top trim starts at a little under $37,000, making it one of the few new cars you can buy now for less than $40,000.
Mazda made the Mazda3 larger when it redesigned the vehicle in 2019. The 2026 version is 183.5 inches long and 70.7 inches wide (without mirrors). The sedan version offers 13.2 cubic feet of cargo space, which I found to be sufficient for luggage and grocery hauls.
Our Mazda3 Turbo Premium Plus test vehicle came with features including a 12-speaker premium audio system and a 360-degree monitor. It also offers the ability to remotely start your car using the MyMazda app.
I also enjoyed the Mazda3’s large infotainment screen and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, but I was not a fan of its knob system for navigating around the screen.
I liked the Mazda3 Turbo Premium Plus, but I’d opt for the 2.5 S base-model trim ($24,640) if I was looking to save the most money possible. I would go for the 2.5 S Preferred trim ($27,290) if I was looking for the best balance of pricing and features since it comes with a power sliding-glass moonroof, eight-way power driver’s seat with two-position memory and heated front seats.
How the Kia K4 Hatchback Stands Out
The 2026 Kia K4 Hatchback starts at just $24,990 with the base-model EX. It comes in EX, GT-Line ($25,990) and GT-Line Turbo trims ($29,890).
I tested the K4 GT-Line Turbo, which is the only trim that comes with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Once you drive the final configuration, it’s tough to imagine buying a K4 without the turbo to give it extra zip when accelerating. It increases horsepower from 147 to 190 and torque from 132 pound-feet to 195 pound-feet, changing the driving experience of the affordable car.
The 2026 Kia K4 Hatchback is 185.4 inches long and 72.8 inches wide (without mirrors). It has 22.2 cubic feet of cargo space, which feels generous for a small hatch.
Kia’s K4 EX and K4 GT-Line are two very different models. The base model costs $4,900 less than the final GT-Line Turbo trim before taxes and fees. If you’re a budget-conscious driver looking for the cheapest version of the K4 Hatch, the EX is an easy choice.
If you’re a driving enthusiast like me and value the impact a turbocharger can make on your daily driving experience, the GT-Line is the only way to go. It also adds premium speakers, dual panoramic displays, a power sunroof and other upgrades.
Which Car Is Better?
The 2026 Mazda3 is sporty and surprisingly powerful. It’s a fun, affordable car if you’re not in the market for a big family hauler. Mazda has a reputation for making affordable cars that still pack a punch, and the Mazda3 is no exception. It’s available in sedan and hatchback formats.
The 2026 Kia K4 Hatchback is a serious value for driving enthusiasts. South Korean automaker Hyundai and its Kia and Genesis brands have made waves in recent years for modern designs and tech. The K4 Hatch doesn’t break the bank and it’s fun to drive in the right configuration.
Kia’s base model can feel a bit barebones, but upper trims feature plenty of creature comforts and tech enhancements that improve its driving and ownership experience. The K4 isn’t as refined as the Mazda3 and it doesn’t come standard with as many premium materials, but it checks several boxes for budget-conscious buyers.
