If you’re looking for a job that’s ripe to be reshaped by AI, you are likely seeing better pay advertised than just a few years ago.
Indeed Hiring Lab grouped jobs more exposed to AI together and found that this category has seen pay growth skyrocket since 2021, more so than those less exposed to AI. Jobs more exposed to AI are more likely to have skills done or transformed by AI, including:
- Software development
- IT systems and support
- Data and analytics
- Marketing
- Banking and finance
Economist Jack Kennedy said that AI is “reshaping which skills the market pays for” rather than replacing skilled workers.
The report showed median advertised salary for more AI-exposed jobs has surged by 46% since 2021. Pay for less-exposed jobs grew by 25%, a slowdown from a year ago. These included:
- Nursing
- Personal care and home health
- Food preparation and service
- Cleaning and sanitation
- Production and manufacturing
There’s a larger gap based on where people are in the career ladder. The pay growth gap between more- and less-AI-exposed jobs is barely noticeable for entry-level roles, unlike for more senior roles.
Kennedy said jobs that are more AI-exposed have also generally experienced a rebound in job opportunities over the past year. “Solid growth in postings over the past year, alongside rising pay, is consistent with the skills in these roles becoming more valuable,” he said.

Separately, the Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes annual job projections that show how hundreds of jobs could change over a decade. This year, the government agency also classified how exposed jobs are to AI, drawing on a few studies about AI.
Many of the 206 very highly exposed jobs were high-paying and projected to see employment increase between 2025 and 2035, such as software developers and management analysts. Meanwhile, physician assistants and dental hygienists are high-paying, low AI-exposure jobs projected to grow.
Some think AI will lead to the end. Jacob Coxon, who worked for AI research employers OpenAI and Anthropic, wrote on X earlier this month that he resigned from Anthropic and that “people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade. “
More Americans think it will, at the very least, mean fewer jobs are needed. A Pew Research Center survey found that 71% of US adults think AI will mean fewer jobs in the country over the next two decades, up from 64% who said this in 2024.
“Worries tend to run particularly high in countries with higher gross domestic product per capita,” a new Pew Research Report said. Seventy-six percent of people in both Australia and South Korea believe it will lead to fewer jobs.
While there are fears about AI’s capabilities, some are embracing ways to leverage it at work, such as automating and speeding up tasks. Some are also incorporating it into their daily lives. A new personal AI agent from Meta topped the free apps list on Apple’s US App Store. Some people use AI chatbots for relationship and other advice.
