7 Ways AI Can Cut Hundreds Off Your Next Trip

News RoomBy News RoomAugust 14, 20262 ViewsNo Comments

Here’s a number worth your attention: The share of travelers over 50 who use artificial intelligence to hunt for travel deals just doubled in a single year, from 8% to 16%. That’s straight from AARP’s 2026 Travel Trends report.

Translation? A lot of your neighbors have figured out something you might’ve missed. The same chatbot you use to draft emails can shave real money off your next trip.

And I don’t mean pocket change. I mean the kind of savings that cover an extra night’s hotel — or the whole flight home.

I’ve been writing about money since 1991, and I’ve watched plenty of “revolutionary” tools turn out to be junk. This one’s different. Used right, AI is the closest thing to a free travel agent you’ll ever get. Used wrong, it’ll book you a hotel that doesn’t exist.

Here’s how to make it work for you — and where to keep your guard up.

1. Let AI plan the whole trip in minutes, not weeks

Planning a single trip can eat up about a month of on-and-off fiddling — 40 browser tabs, endless comparison, second-guessing. That estimate comes from Gondola AI’s co-founder, speaking to CBS News.

A chatbot collapses that into one conversation. Tell ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude where you’re headed, your budget, and who’s coming. Then ask for a day-by-day plan with free activities baked in.

You’re not early to this, by the way. Some 41% of more than 2,000 consumers in an Oliver Wyman survey said they’d already used AI for trip inspiration or itineraries.

The payoff isn’t just saved time. Ask for free museums, no-cost walking tours, and cheap local eats, and the AI will fill your days without draining your wallet. (If you want AI wins beyond travel, here are seven money problems you can fix with AI for almost nothing.)

2. Point AI at the airfare — that’s where the big money hides

Airfare is the single biggest line item on most trips, and prices move by the minute. That’s exactly the kind of grunt work AI was built to handle.

Google Flight Deals lets you describe the trip — “beach escape in October,” “Paris in the fall” — and hunts for the cheapest option. CBS News notes it’s designed specifically for travelers trying to save.

One catch: It finds the fare but won’t book it for you. Treat it as your scout, not your travel agent.

3. Turn a vacation video into a bookable trip

See a reel that makes you want to drop everything and go? Expedia’s Trip Matching lets you send a public Instagram travel video, and it builds an itinerary based on what it sees.

The limits are real. The reel has to be public, and for now the tool only maps out trips inside the U.S. Still, it’s a fast way to turn “I want that” into “here’s the plan.”

4. Squeeze every last dollar out of your points and miles

This is where AI earns its keep. Most of us are terrible at tracking loyalty points — they pile up, expire, or get cashed in for a fraction of their worth.

A tool called Gondola AI reads your email, adds up your airline, hotel, and card rewards, and tells you what they’re actually worth. It weighs paying cash against paying with points and can save you hundreds, according to CBS News.

If you’ve got miles scattered across three airlines and two credit cards, that’s about as close to found money as it gets.

Quick gut-check — if your money advice is coming from random online influencers, you’re playing a dangerous game. I’ve been a CPA since 1981 and writing about money since before the internet existed. Sign up for the free Money Talks Newsletter and get expert advice that’s been tested by time.

5. Make AI your translator and guide once you land

Savings don’t stop at the gate. Scott Keyes, founder of flight-deal site Going.com, told CBS News that ChatGPT changed how he got around China, scanning menus and translating them on the spot. “I used it dozens of times a day,” he said.

That’s more than convenience. Reading the local menu instead of the tourist-trap version, or finding the spot where locals actually eat, is how you stop overpaying for every meal.

6. Have AI write your ‘please lower my rate’ script

Here’s a move most people miss. Hotels and booking sites will sometimes match a lower price or waive a fee — if you ask the right way.

Open a chatbot, tell it the rate you found elsewhere, and ask it to write a short, polite script. You can read that to the front desk or paste it into a chat window.

It’s one of the simplest ways AI chatbots can help you save money, and it works on far more than hotels.

7. Verify everything before you hand over a dime

Now the part the hype crowd skips. AI sounds confident even when it’s flat wrong. It can invent a hotel, botch a layover, or “confirm” a deal that vanished weeks ago.

So use it to draft, compare, and research — then check the actual airline or hotel site before you book. Prices and availability shift fast, and the AI doesn’t always keep up.

Treat it like a sharp assistant, not the boss. The same caution applies anywhere you let AI near your cash — it’s worth seeing how investors are using AI to build wealth without getting burned.

The bottom line

The tools only get better from here. Pair these tricks with the old-school ways to save on travel and a stack of travel freebies worth grabbing, and the savings add up fast.

The travelers who come out ahead aren’t chasing every shiny new app. They let AI do the digging, then double-check before they buy. Do that, and your next trip costs less — without costing you a single day of vacation stress.
