9 Times Insurance Saved the Day

Insurance can feel abstract until you need it. Month after month, year after year, you pay premiums without filing a claim. Then, suddenly, that policy is the difference between owing massive debt and having the costs covered.

These are the stories of people who were grateful they had the foresight to insure themselves before disaster struck.

Home insurance payouts

1. Louise Hamlin wildfire damage

The Eaton Fire destroyed Louise Hamlin’s 1,500-square-foot home in Altadena, California. Within weeks, her homeowners policy had paid nearly $1 million, and she was already searching for contractors.

The money could not replace the neighborhood she lost. It did mean she could start rebuilding instead of borrowing against the ruins or walking away from the land.

2. Rampersad family house fire

A New Year’s fire left Jeremie Rampersad and his family unable to live in the Queens home they had occupied for 44 years. Their insurer delivered temporary housing, living expenses and a $500,000 check to begin repairs, though the claim first stalled over whether the attic held an illegal apartment.

That payment covered the two things they needed immediately: somewhere to sleep and money to start salvaging.

3. John and April Santangelo house fire

A fire destroyed John and April Santangelo’s New Jersey home, where they had raised three children. Their insurer initially offered $295,000 toward a property insured for more than $500,000.

The couple hired a public adjuster and challenged the math. The offer rose by $89,000, enough to demolish the ruined structure and rebuild. April Santangelo said that without it, the family might have sold the lot and started over somewhere else.

4. Heidi Lange wildfire damage

The 2018 Camp Fire destroyed Heidi Lange’s home along with much of Paradise, California. A divorce afterward left her with only half of the insurance proceeds.

She rebuilt anyway. Lange budgeted the money carefully and rebuilt her home, even paying extra for stucco siding and a metal roof, hedges against the next fire. Even after the divorce divided the proceeds, the money was enough to keep her a homeowner.

Renters insurance payouts

5. Jackie Lam wildfire evacuation

Personal finance writer Jackie Lam nearly dropped the renters policy on her small cabin near Altadena. She renewed instead, paying $253 for the year.

Months later, the Eaton Fire forced her to evacuate. The cabin survived, but ash and debris did not clean themselves, and her policy covered the additional living expenses and professional cleanup. The close call sent her back to check whether her coverage limits were actually high enough.

6. Abigale Albera burst pipe

Abigale Albera and her husband had lived in a new Tulsa apartment for eight weeks when a burst pipe flooded the unit and ruined their furniture.

They fronted the costs themselves: hotel rooms, meals, replacement furniture, a new deposit and first month’s rent elsewhere. Renters insurance later reimbursed more than $5,000, turning what could have been a permanent loss into a temporary cash-flow squeeze.

7. Mary-Louise Tulloss and Jon Olsen fire and asbestos

A deadly fire, smoke contamination and asbestos made a Colorado senior apartment building unsafe, pushing nearly 200 residents out.

Mary-Louise Tulloss and her partner, Jon Olsen, moved into a hotel because their policy helped cover temporary lodging. A kitchenette with two forks and one bowl was hardly home. It beat an uninhabitable apartment, and it beat paying an open-ended hotel bill out of pocket.

Auto insurance payouts

8. Doreen Brown totaled car

Doreen Brown’s Nissan Murano was eight months old when the liftgate of an 18-wheeler crushed it outside her workplace. Her standard auto insurer paid the car’s value, but she still owed $5,945.33 on the loan. The car was gone; the debt was not.

Brown had bought gap coverage, which paid the remaining balance in full. Without it, she would have been making payments on a totaled vehicle while financing its replacement.

9. James Hornik flood damage

Flash flooding near James Hornik’s Lake Hughes, California, home left his 2016 Dodge Challenger with a waterlogged engine and electrical damage. Repair estimates came to about $8,000.

His insurer initially offered roughly $4,000, but after Hornik challenged the amount, Geico added about $4,000 to cover the engine replacement and other repairs. The payout put his car back on the road instead of leaving him to absorb a major flood-damage bill.
