According to an Indeed Hiring Lab analysis, women now hold more payroll jobs than men in America. It’s only the third time this has ever happened. The first two times, during the Great Recession and just before COVID, the gap snapped back once construction and manufacturing started hiring again.
This time looks different. Between February 2025 and February 2026, women added 298,000 jobs while men lost 142,000. Male labor force participation has fallen to its lowest level since tracking began in 1948, outside the pandemic. Roughly one in three prime-age and young men is neither working nor looking for work.
