With rising food prices, a routine trip to the grocery store can feel like a luxury. In California, high-end grocery stores such as Erewhon, where custom smoothie kits go for $100, are becoming increasingly prominent in this K-shaped economy.
According to the Food Institute, luxury grocery stores are thriving as they attract affluent shoppers and Gen Z consumers who are embracing premium foods and curated shopping experiences, prompting chains like Erewhon to expand their footprint across Los Angeles County.
Additionally, with the rise of the MAHA (Make America Healthy Again) movement and increasingly savvy consumers seeking greater transparency about what is in their food, products made with few or no additives are gaining traction among California shoppers.
Trader Joe’s Still Reigns, but Berkeley Has Its Own Favorite
Earlier this year, fan favorite and one of the most iconic retail establishments in California, Trader Joe’s, was named the most popular grocery store in the United States in the 2026 American Consumer Satisfaction Index.
The store’s relaxed vibe, stance on natural ingredients, and diverse product offerings without big-name brands are appealing to California shoppers as a renewed focus on “clean” food makes Trader Joe’s a trendsetter.
While Trader Joe’s continues to appeal to California grocery shoppers, the state is home to a whopping 205 locations, and counting, one Bay Area grocery store occupies a special place in the hearts of many.
The Berkeley Bowl Magic
Before grocery shopping together became a dating trend, young shoppers knew that if you wanted to “accidentally” run into someone you met the night before at a local show, you needed to stock up on snacks at the Berkeley Bowl.
Established in 1977, Berkeley Bowl was the original shopping experience for folks who liked to buy their grains, dried beans and preserved fruit in bulk and loved a good produce section. College students would drive — or bike — across the city to shop there before grabbing a snack, perhaps a nutritious multigrain muffin, to fortify themselves on the way home.
A blog post by Love Food named Berkeley Bowl, now with two locations in Berkeley, as the best grocery store in California. Noting its “delicious baked goods, fresh meats, fish and produce,” the author said shoppers can also find good deals on products.
As more shoppers choose premade items over dining out or making a meal from scratch, according to a report by FMI, the Food Industry Association, Berkeley Bowl’s hot bar is a must, featuring sushi, salads, sandwiches and more.
