This map shows the 26 states where Taylor Farms has recalled foods that could be contaminated with salmonella

Weeks after Taylor Farms recalled iceberg lettuce over a major cyclosporiasis outbreak, it has pulled products containing jalapeños that could salmonella — a bug that can also cause watery diarrhea.

The map below shows the 26 states where Taylor Fresh Foods, which operates as Taylor Farms, recalled ready-made items containing fresh jalapeños, including pico de gallo salsa, spicy guacamole, and rice and bean burritos.

Hover over each state on the map to see the respective number of individual products recalled and their retailers, per Taylor Farms.

Taylor Farms said in a statement on Sunday that the products were sent to retail distribution centers in: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Wisconsin, and West Virginia.

Taylor Farms jalapeño products were recalled from retailers including Walmart

Taylor Farms’ products are sold directly to consumers but also used in pre-made food items sold in grocery stores and restaurants.

A range of salsa and guacamoles, as well as chopped jalapeños, burritos, and a roast beef sandwich, were recalled from:

  • Hannaford
  • Kroger
  • Target
  • Trader Joe’s
  • Walmart
  • Whole Foods
  • Stop and Shop (It said in a statement Monday that two products were affected: the Chipotle Chicken Tortilla Wrap and Fresh Pico de Gallo Salsa. They have both been removed from sale. Customers should discard these products, and can contact Stop and Shop of a full refund.)

Business Insider has contacted the retailers for comment.

Chipotle and QDOBA have been linked to a salmonella outbreak

Taylor Farms sourced its jalapeños from a grower tied to a salmonella outbreak, but its products haven’t been linked to any cases. Taylor Farms company said it is no longer sourcing products from the farm and will use alternative suppliers.

On August 5, the CDC and the FDA said they were investigating salmonella cases tied to jalapeños distributed by the produce wholesaler Coast Citrus Distributors. The peppers were grown at a farm in Sinaloa, Mexico, the same one previously used by Taylor Farms.

The CDC reported a total of 345 infections, 36 hospitalizations, and zero deaths in the salmonella outbreak across 27 states, as of August 5. The CDC interviewed 191 of the people who caught the infection, and 93% reported eating at a Mexican-style restaurant before they became sick, including Chipotle Mexican Grill or QDOBA, between June 14 and July 14.

In a statement on Wednesday, Chipotle it stopped serving the potentially affected jalapeños and switched suppliers. That day, QDOBA also said it had temporarily removed all jalapeño products from its restaurants.

The FDA said in a statement that given Chipotle and QDOBA’s actions, it “does not consider there to be a current ongoing risk from these establishments to consumers in this outbreak.”

The symptoms of a salmonella infection include watery diarrhea and stomach cramps.

Salmonella is a type of bacteria that makes us sick if we ingest it. Most people experience symptoms, including watery diarrhea that might contain blood or mucus, and stomach cramps that can be severe. Headache, nausea, vomiting, and a loss of appetite are also common.

Unlike cyclosporiasis symptoms, which can show between two days and two weeks after a person is infected, salmonella symptoms usually start six hours to six days after infection and typically last four to seven days.

Salmonella infections are more common in warmer weather, which is the ideal condition for it to grow on unrefrigerated foods, according to the CDC.
