Giant Eagle Lowers Prices, Joining Other Retailers. What Costs Less?

From ground beef to peanut butter, food retailer Giant Eagle has joined a growing list of grocers lowering prices on thousands of items this summer as many U.S. consumers struggle to make ends meet.

A LendingTree survey earlier this year found that 49% of Americans said it was difficult to afford food, and 22% of low-income households reported buying fewer groceries as prices climb. Grocery costs were up 3% over the year in June, according to Labor Department data.

“We know our customers are seeking value in the face of elevated expenses,” Justin Weinstein, Giant Eagle’s executive vice president and chief merchandising and marketing officer, said in a statement. “We took learnings from our seasonal pricing efforts last fall and used those insights to deliver a strong savings program that can help customers save all summer long.”

The move comes after Walmart, Sam’s Club, and Stop & Shop announced similar price reductions this summer. David Ortega, a food economist and professor at Michigan State University, previously told USA TODAY that the Walmart rollbacks looked “less like a turning point on food inflation and more like an aggressive summer promotion.”

President Donald Trump, who has struggled to win favorability with voters over the economy in his second term, attempted to take some credit for price declines at Giant Eagle and Walmart, saying they answered his “call to lower costs for working families” in a July 19 Truth Social post.

Giant Eagle Cuts Prices on More Than 300 Items

From July 9 through Sept. 9, Giant Eagle said customers shopping in its stores across western Pennsylvania, north central Ohio, northern West Virginia, Maryland, and Indiana, will see lower prices on “more than 300 items,” and noted the following price declines.

Price Reductions Coming to ‘Most’ Walmart Stores

Walmart said on July 6 customers will see the following rollbacks across “most” of its 4,614 stores in the United States.

Fresh 73% ground beef roll: Was $6.74 per pound. Now $5.94 per pound.
Fresh sweet corn on the cob: Was $0.68 each. Now $0.25.
Fresh red cherries (2.25 pound bag): Was $11.18. Now $5.63.
48 fl. oz. Great Value ice cream: Was $2.97. Now $2.50.
Lay’s classic potato chips 8 oz. bag: Was $2.97. Now $2.50.
18-count Frito-Lay family fun variety pack: Was $9.97. Now $8.97.
200-count Great Value disposable paper plates: Was $9.97. Now $8.97.
24-packs of Coca-Cola, Diet Coke, and Coca-Cola Zero Sugar: Were $14.97. Now $9.97.

Sam’s Club Rolls Back Prices on 250 Items

Sam’s Club, owned by Walmart, also announced price rollbacks July 6 on “more than 250 items,” across its 601 stores in the United States, the company said. It highlighted the following price declines.

Member’s Mark bone-in chicken wings: Were $2.88 per pound. Now $2 per pound.
Member’s Mark beef hot dogs: Were $12.96. Now $10.86.
Member’s Mark 88/12 ground beef: Was $6.17 per pound. Now $5.97.
Member’s Mark whole bone-in pork back ribs: Were $3.48 per pound. Now $3.18 per pound.

Stop & Shop Cuts Prices on Thousands of Items

Stop & Shop announced May 18 price rollbacks “on thousands of items” across its 137 stores in New York and New Jersey. After this move, the company said it had lowered prices at more than 350 stores throughout those two states, as well as Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut.

The rollbacks are part of the company’s multi-year transformation strategy announced in 2024, it said.

“We’ve remained steadfast in making this significant investment in prices for our local customers, even as broader economic uncertainties persist,” Stop & Shop President Roger Wheeler said in a statement.

Stop & Shop highlighted the following price declines in May.
