CBS journalist Weijia Jiang gets props for poise under pressure after press dinner shooting

News RoomBy News RoomApril 26, 20262 ViewsNo Comments

CBS’s Weijia Jiang is receiving praise for her poise under pressure during the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.

The network’s senior White House correspondent is the president of the White House Correspondents’ Association, which hosts the annual dinner. She was seated next to President Donald Trump onstage when bedlam broke out in the Washington Hilton ballroom, after gunshots were heard.

Jiang later took a front-row seat in the briefing room and asked the first question when Trump took questions from the media.

“I came to the WH with President Trump, who is preparing for a press conference to brief reporters,” Jiang posted on X before the briefing. “We hope to have more answers soon. A few of us are waiting in the briefing room. Thank God he, the First Lady, and everyone who was attending the WHCD was safe.”

“This badass went from running the dinner to leading the questions from the briefing room. @weijia you are just the best,” Kristin Brown, the White House producer for CBS News, posted on X.

“And phoning into CBS special coverage as she went from the ballroom to the briefing room!” Oklahoma State University media professor Dylan McLemore wrote on X.

McLemore had earlier posted about watching Jiang “reporting by phone from the scene, which may explain why CBS is giving coverage an extended network window compared to their peers.”

Most journalists at the press conference appeared to have come straight from the dinner, clad in black tie.

“Absolutely baller moment from #WHCD President @Weijia, dressed to the nines, poised at a godlevel, asking first question of @POTUS after shooting event,” Florida Politics publisher and editor Peter Schorsch wrote on X.

Jiang earned the praise online for her remarkable composure, a steadiness that became especially striking given how quickly the evening descended into chaos.

Just after 8:30 p.m., shortly after Trump had appeared for the first time as US president at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, an individual breached the main doors of the event. In a security video, posted by Trump on Truth Social, officers in the video could be seen trying to grab the man, then drawing their weapons and pointing their guns at him.

Inside, shouting at the front of the stage gave way to pushing and chaos as people started running, guests threw themselves to the floor, and hid under tables, according to Tim Röhn, the senior editor of the Axel Springer Global Reporters Network, who was at the event. Business Insider is part of the network.

While Secret Service ushered Trump and Vice President JD Vance off the stage, heavily armed officers emerged from behind the curtains onstage and pointed their rifles at the crowd.

For a short time afterward, video streams from inside the event room showed a lull as attendees appeared confused.

Shortly after the incident, Jiang took the stage to say the night’s programming would continue. She later addressed the crowd again, saying law enforcement had requested that everyone leave the premises “consistent with protocol,” and that Trump would hold a press conference shortly, addressing the night’s events.

From there, she appeared at the press conference.

Jiang’s swift return to reporting became a striking visual of the night — a reminder that in Washington, even the most choreographed events can, without warning, turn into breaking news.
