What’s Open and Closed on Labor Day? Here’s What to Know

News RoomBy News RoomSeptember 6, 20261 ViewsNo Comments

Labor Day weekend has arrived, and consumers looking for last-minute cookout supplies or holiday deals will have plenty of shopping and dining options on Monday.

Banks and post offices will be closed Monday, Sept. 7, in observance of the holiday, while most major restaurant, grocery and retail chains will remain open. The stock market will also be closed.

When Is Labor Day 2026?

This year, Labor Day falls on Monday, Sept. 7, with the holiday weekend running from Sept. 5 through Sept. 7.

Are Banks, Post Offices and Delivery Services Open?

  • Labor Day is a U.S. Postal Service holiday, so mail will not be delivered and post offices will be closed for retail transactions on Sept. 7.
  • UPS and FedEx pickup and delivery services will not be available on Labor Day. UPS Store locations may be closed, and FedEx Office hours will be modified.
  • Most bank branches will be closed because Labor Day is a federal holiday. ATMs and online banking remain available, but transactions or deposits may not process until the next business day.

Is the Stock Market Open on Labor Day?

U.S. stock markets will be closed Monday, Sept. 7. Nasdaq and the New York Stock Exchange will reopen Tuesday, Sept. 8. The U.S. bond market will also be closed Sept. 7, according to the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association.

Are Grocery Stores Open on Labor Day?

Most grocery chains will be open on Labor Day, although some may have limited hours. Kroger says its stores will be open regular hours, though pharmacy and clinic hours may vary. Walmart, Publix, Trader Joe’s and Meijer have traditionally been open on Labor Day.

Sam’s Club warehouses will open at 8 a.m. for Plus members and 9 a.m. for Club members and close at 8 p.m., according to the company’s website. BJ’s warehouses will be open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., the company says on its website.

Costco warehouses will be closed on Labor Day.

Are Restaurants and Retail Stores Open?

Most restaurant chains will remain open on Labor Day, including McDonald’s, Starbucks, Chipotle, Chick-fil-A, Dunkin and Wendy’s, among others. Most national retailers, including Home Depot, Lowe’s, Best Buy, IKEA, Target, TJ Maxx and Bass Pro Shop, will also remain open. Check each company’s app or contact your nearest location because holiday hours can vary.

Hours and closures may vary by location; check with the business before leaving home.
