What China’s internet is saying about Moonshot’s hot new Kimi model

News RoomBy News RoomJuly 21, 202613 ViewsNo Comments

Moonshot AI’s latest Kimi K3 model is giving China’s internet plenty to talk about.

The Chinese startup unveiled the open-weight model on Thursday, touting its ability to compete with leading systems from OpenAI and Anthropic at a fraction of the cost. Days later, Moonshot AI temporarily suspended new subscriptions, citing overwhelming demand that stretched its computing capacity.

Like DeepSeek before it, Kimi K3 has become the latest Chinese AI model to spark discussion about China’s emergence as a strong contender in the global AI race.

On Weibo, China’s version of X, posts about Kimi K3 surged to the top of the platform’s trending list as users weighed in on the new model.

Many saw it as another sign that Chinese AI companies can compete with the world’s leading AI developers.

At the same time, the launch of Kimi K3 also sparked a broader, spirited discussion about whether open-weight models could rival proprietary systems from US companies, and how China would meet the growing demand for computing power.

Debates on compute

One of the trending topics on the platform, titled “Kimi K3 sparks debate over AI compute,” drew hundreds of users weighing in on what the model’s launch means for the future of AI infrastructure.

Moonshot AI says Kimi K3 converts computing power into AI capabilities more effectively than its predecessor.

However, several popular posts on Weibo theorized that while more efficient models may lower the cost of individual tasks, they also drive wider adoption, which will drastically increase the overall demand for computing resources.

“The competition is no longer about which single GPU is the most powerful. It’s about how much computing capacity an entire cluster can handle,” one user from Zhejiang wrote.

“Put simply, the more capable AI becomes, the greater its appetite for computing power. This race to build more powerful AI hardware isn’t slowing down anytime soon,” another user from Shandong, a province south of Beijing, said.

The Claude comparison

Another Weibo trend, “Kimi K3 launch prompts online jabs at Anthropic,” highlighted overseas reactions comparing Kimi K3 with Anthropic’s Claude models.

“Competition among AI software is likely to shift from focusing purely on performance to balancing both performance and token usage. In other words, it’ll become a competition over value for money. It doesn’t matter how powerful your model is if it uses too many tokens. And it doesn’t matter how good it is if the monthly subscription is too expensive,” one user from Jiangsu, a coastal province north of Shanghai, said.

Beyond comparisons between the two models, others said that Kimi K3 also sparked a broader conversation about the global AI race.

“They’re starting to reflect on the system itself: Why didn’t this kind of breakthrough happen in the US? Visas, the startup environment, and even internal management have all become topics of discussion,” another user from Hubei, in central China, wrote.

All about Elon

The exchange between Moonshot AI and Elon Musk also dominated discussion on Weibo, where hashtags such as “Kimi responds to Musk’s challenge,” “Musk says new model could surpass Kimi,” and “Kimi welcomes Musk” climbed the platform’s trending list.

On Saturday, Elon Musk said on X that initial training for xAI’s next-generation Grok 4.6 model had entered its final stages, and that the 2 trillion-parameter model “might be able to exceed Kimi” while maintaining similar speed and token efficiency to Grok 4.5.

In response, Moonshot AI’s official Weibo account wrote, “Welcome to the 2 Trillion+ Club.”

Several popular posts described Moonshot AI’s response as restrained and well handled.

“It’s great to see a Chinese team staying confident, letting its technology speak for itself in this global AI showdown,” one user from Shaanxi wrote.

“Calling it a ‘club’ broadened the conversation instead of turning it into a confrontation. This kind of healthy competition is refreshing and far better than trading insults,” another user from Beijing wrote.

“As Chinese and international AI companies keep challenging one another, the biggest beneficiaries will ultimately be the people who use these models,” another user, also from Beijing, said.
