My partner and I are starting to want different things as we approach 60. We’re still staying connected.

I’ve been with my partner for over 30 years, and our relationship has the most important foundation in place: shared values, similar outlook, and common ground on what matters most. Our anchor is strong, but as we approach retirement and are both working part-time from home, we are seeking self-improvement to avoid stagnation in our routines. What’s shifting for us is how we each want to expand ourselves now that we have more freedom and time.

While I’m leaning into the physical: strength, vitality, movement, health, feeling capable and energized in my body, my partner leans into the mental: curiosity, learning, ideas, creativity, reflection, exploring new thoughts, understanding the world and herself more deeply.

Our interests complement each other

I don’t see our preferences as opposites — they’re complements. One fuels the body that carries you through life; the other fuels the mind that gives it meaning. Both are forms of growth, and both are deeply valuable.

We celebrate each other’s wins instead of comparing, cheer each other on, and learn from each other’s worlds. I tell her how much I admire her curiosity and love of learning, and ask questions so she can share. She lets me know how good it feels to see me strong, lean, and active.

In my spare time, I focus on maintaining my weight and challenging myself at the gym three times a week. I get on my mountain bike or hike up mountains. I tell my partner what I’ve been doing in my workouts, and we make a point of walking together every day, even in the rain.

My partner enjoys expanding her knowledge of health, therapies, and natural remedies. Like me, she likes to hike or bike ride, but not as often. Fortunately, we can each pursue our individual interests, grow and learn from each other, and come together to share experiences as we grow older.

We still spend a lot of time together sharing our interests

Common goals and roles still apply in our relationship, and we still spend much of our spare time together, incorporating our interests. I recently joined her on a keto diet and lost eight pounds, and I’ve tried Pilates, high-intensity interval training, and meditation in recent months. I’ve also enjoyed letting my partner practice and refine some of her therapy techniques on me over the years. Whether it’s using Reiki for relaxation, the Bowen Technique to relieve pain and stress, or an herbal remedy for joint pain or digestive issues, these natural health therapies benefit us both.

We also love sharing gardening and cooking duties. We enjoy camping, traveling, and taking an active interest in what our 21-year-old daughter is up to. We also recognize and respect each other’s space more these days, and the importance of solo time; our time together is growing, and it has more intent than when we were working full time.

I feel that growing stronger physically and having better stamina makes me more capable and makes me feel alive and ready for everything I tackle. My partner’s exploration of ideas and understanding of the world excites her and makes both our lives more meaningful and richer.

We see each other’s individual interests as shared love expressed differently, which means there’s no tension — only admiration. That’s partnership at its finest: same destination, two beautiful ways of walking it.

After six decades on planet Earth, we both realize that a healthy life is built on a foundation where body and mind thrive together. I’ve got the body covered; my partner’s got the mind covered. And together, we’ve got life and our relationship covered.
