When my son moved to New York City after college graduation, I couldn’t have been prouder. He had landed a great job, found an apartment, made friends, and embraced everything the city had to offer. Two years after my daughter finished college, we packed up a U-Haul and drove her more than 700 miles to Chicago to start her new chapter.
Watching both of my children confidently step into adulthood was everything I’d hoped for when they were little. Watching them leave was also one of the hardest things I’ve ever done.
I raised my kids to be independent
As parents, we spend years preparing our children to become independent. We celebrate every milestone that gets them closer to adulthood. The first day of school. Learning to ride a bike. Driving a car. Going away to college. Landing that first job. Every accomplishment feels like proof we’re doing something right.
No one tells you that one day those same accomplishments will leave your house quiet.
These days, my son has favorite restaurants in New York I’ve never been to. He has his own routines, friends, and a new life with his fiancé. My daughter has created a life in Chicago that fits her perfectly. She knows the neighborhoods, has favorite places to shop and eat, and has built her own community. They don’t call to ask how to do laundry anymore or need me to remind them about doctor’s appointments. They’re living exactly the lives I raised them to have.
And somehow, that’s where the grief begins.
It hurts every time I say goodbye to them
It’s a strange kind of grief because nothing bad has happened. They’re healthy. They’re happy. They’re successful. They call, they visit, and we have wonderful relationships. In many ways, this is the dream every parent hopes for. Yet every time I hug them goodbye after visiting with them, I ache to the core and cry the entire way home.
I realized what I was mourning wasn’t my children. It was that version of motherhood that had come to an end.
For twenty-two years, my life revolved around school schedules, sports, family dinners, and helping them become capable adults. Then, almost without noticing, my role changed. They still wanted me in their lives, but they no longer needed me every day. That’s exactly what I had worked so hard to accomplish.
The irony wasn’t lost on me. My greatest success as a parent also felt like one of my greatest losses.
I wondered if something was wrong with me. Shouldn’t I simply be happy? Why did I feel so emotional when this was exactly what I’d wanted for them? It wasn’t until I shared my feelings in TikTok videos that I realized I wasn’t alone.
In one video, I wrote, “One day your daughter has her own city, her own routines, her own life… and you realize she’s become the woman you hoped she’d be.”
More than 65,000 people watched it, and more than 2,200 shared it. The comments said everything.
Again and again, parents described the same impossible contradiction: How can I be so incredibly proud and miss them this much at the same time?
It’s pride and loss existing side by side.
When I visit my son in New York City or my daughter in Chicago, I love seeing them in their own worlds. I love that they have careers they’re passionate about, apartments they’ve made their own, and lives full of people they love. Seeing them so confident and living fully fills me with pride.
Then I go home.
I miss the ordinary moments
That’s when I miss the little things. Shoes in the mudroom. Messy bedrooms. Knowing everyone would be home for dinner. The ordinary moments you never realize you’re living for the last time.
I don’t think we talk enough about this stage of parenthood. We prepare parents for diapers, teenage years, and college drop-offs. We don’t prepare them for the emotional whiplash of watching your children become exactly who you hoped they’d be while quietly grieving the life you shared before they flew.
The goal was never to keep them forever. It was to give them the confidence to build lives they loved, even if those lives took them hundreds of miles away. I spent 22 years raising my children to leave me.
Seeing them thrive tells me I succeeded. Missing them every day reminds me how much I loved the years when they needed me.
