How to Get 5% to 20% Off Almost Everything You Buy

News RoomBy News RoomSeptember 7, 20261 ViewsNo Comments

Here’s a confession: I hate paying full price. Always have. And after 45 years around money, I’ve learned that full price is usually just an opening offer — one most people accept without a word.

The trouble is, when folks do try to save, they use one trick at a time. They haggle, or they use a cash-back app, or they pull out a rewards card. The pros use all three — on the same purchase.

Stack them, and 5% to 20% comes off almost anything expensive. On stuff you were buying anyway. Here’s the system.

1. Always ask for a better price

This is the big lever, and the one that scares people. Don’t let it. Consumer Reports surveyed shoppers and found 89% of those who haggled saved money at least once. Furniture hagglers alone saved around $300.

On big-ticket items — appliances, furniture, mattresses, electronics, hotel rooms, even medical bills — the sticker price is a fiction the seller hopes you won’t question. Question it.

Here’s the only negotiating trick you really need, learned in 10 years selling investments: Make your offer, then stop talking. Let the silence hang. More often than not, the next person to speak gives ground. There’s a whole art to this — when to push, what’s fair game, how to time it.

2. Buy through a cash-back site or app

Once you’ve settled on a price — especially online — don’t click “buy” straight from the store. Go through a cash-back portal first, like Rakuten or Capital One Shopping.

You click their link, shop like normal, and they hand you back a slice of what you spent — anywhere from 1% to double digits, depending on the store and the day. It’s free, it takes a minute to sign up, and it stacks on top of everything else.

3. Pay with a cash-back credit card

Now pay with a card that pays you back. A good flat-rate card returns 2% on everything, and some category cards run as high as 5% on certain purchases.

One rule, and it isn’t optional: pay the balance in full every month. Carry a balance and the interest swallows your rewards many times over. Rewards are only free if you never hand the bank a dime of interest to get them.

Quick aside — most internet financial advice comes from people who weren’t alive during the last recession. I’ve been writing about money for more than 35 years. Want rock-solid advice? Sign up for the free Money Talks Newsletter. Takes 10 seconds. No fluff. No spam.

4. Stack them so the savings compound

Here’s where it gets fun. Each move is fine on its own. Together, they pile up. Let me show you with a $2,000 purchase — say a laptop or a couch.

Haggle 10% off, and you’re at $1,800 — $200 saved. Buy through a portal paying 3%, and $54 comes back. Pay with a 2% card, and another $36 lands in your pocket.

Add it up: about $290 off a $2,000 buy. That’s roughly 15% — on something you were going to purchase regardless. Do that a few times a year and you’re talking real money.

5. Know when to skip a layer — and when 20% is on the table

Not every purchase gives you all three. A fixed online price with no wiggle room still gets you the portal and the card — call it 5% for 30 seconds of effort. That’s your floor.

The ceiling is higher than you’d think. Land a real discount on a big negotiable item, catch a fat portal promotion, and pay with a strong card, and 20% off is very doable. The more expensive the thing, the more the stack is worth.

The bottom line

Retailers count on you treating the sticker price as the final word. It isn’t. It’s the starting bid.

You don’t need to become a hard-nosed haggler or a coupon fanatic. You just need to run the same three moves, in order, every time you spend real money. Ask. Route it through a portal. Pay with the right card.

Full price is for people who don’t know they had a choice. Now you do.
