General Motors Lays Off Hundreds of IT Workers Globally

News RoomBy News RoomMay 12, 20261 ViewsNo Comments

General Motors is laying off 500-600 information technology workers in Michigan and elsewhere to reorganize around different skills and reduce overlap, the company confirmed May 11.

The IT roles include jobs across GM’s global operations, according to spokesman Kevin Kelly.

But GM would not confirm other specific locations for the layoffs outside of the Global Technical Center in Warren. It also would not say how many people in Michigan are affected.

“GM is transforming its Information Technology organization to better position the company for the future,” according to an emailed statement. “As part of that work, we have made the difficult decision to eliminate certain roles globally. We are grateful for the contributions of the employees affected and are committed to supporting them through this transition.”

The cuts were first reported by Bloomberg, which cited “people familiar with the matter” who asked not to be identified.

This is the latest round of job cuts for the company since the layoff of several hundred workers last October. About 200 Computer-Aided Design, or CAD, engineers who worked at the company’s global tech campus in Warren were cut at that time, GM said, as part of the organization’s ongoing efforts to reevaluate its businesses and boost profits.

Reporting by Jackie Charniga, Detroit Free Press.
