As I Get Older, I Don’t Want to Slow Down

News RoomBy News RoomJune 11, 20250 ViewsNo Comments

I may be greyer and have more wrinkles, but as I approach 60, I’m also wiser. I don’t want to be 21 again, so I’m embracing the things that matter most at this stage in life.

For me, it’s not necessarily about slowing down, but more about changing gears and enjoying the ride.

I’ve started reflecting on my life goals and making conscious choices to lead a more active, healthy, and joyful life. I’m working less and spending less. My finances are in good shape, and I’m embracing this next chapter.

Getting older doesn’t have to mean feeling old

Age is just a number; although aging is inevitable, it doesn’t have to mean feeling old. Aging well requires effort and some planning. For me, it means adopting a healthy diet, incorporating exercise that benefits my heart, joints, and mobility, and living in a way that brings me inner and outer peace and satisfaction.

Staying active is a key component of aging well. Movement is my medicine, and regular exercise is vital. However, my approach to exercise has changed from when I was in my 20s or 30s. I no longer lift heavy weights at the gym or push myself to the point of extreme fatigue or pain. Instead, my workouts are mindful of my joints and focus on minimizing aches and pains. My goal is to remain mobile and supple while getting my heart pumping at a level appropriate for my age and fitness level.

I recently started doing high-intensity interval training (HIIT) with my partner. HIIT alternates short bursts of intense exercise with brief recovery periods. There are online videos and exercises for all abilities, including those over 60. The workouts improve my stamina, engage different muscles, burn calories, and kick-start my day.

A simple walk is another crucial part of my daily routine. It forces me to get outdoors and stretch my legs, and I find it helps me to leave my worries behind.

I eat healthier now

Another essential aspect of aging well is maintaining a nutritious diet. A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains is crucial for healthy aging. I prioritize staying hydrated and drinking plenty of water, while limiting junk food to rare treats.

I find greater satisfaction in cooking at home than in dining out. I’ve reduced my consumption of dairy and gluten products, which has made me feel better overall. While I have a sweet tooth and enjoy indulging occasionally, I try not to overindulge. Eating earlier in the evening gives my body a good chance to digest, and I’ve adopted the habit of drinking chamomile tea before bed.

I enjoy growing and picking fruit and vegetables from my garden. I know I’m eating fresh, spray-free, and saving money on groceries. Gardening has become a healthy hobby that I highly recommend. It gives me a sense of achievement and pride.

I do things that bring me joy

As I head into my twilight years, I’m making more time for the things that bring me joy. I’ve finally realised that self-care isn’t selfish; it’s essential for a happy and fulfilling life. With more free time, I find it vital to have hobbies and activities that I love.

I enjoy hiking, and although I’m not at the same fitness level I was in my 20s or 30s, I love climbing hills and mountains, listening to the birds, and being rewarded with breathtaking views.

Reading is another passion of mine. Staying curious and exploring new things through history books or inspiring real-life stories keeps my mind engaged. Listening to music, especially from the late 1970s and early 1980s, brings a smile to my face and fills me with nostalgia.

Travel is another love of mine. I want to engage in active travel now, like hiking in the Himalayas and cycling in Sapin, and save the cruises and organised tours for when I’m older, less adventurous, and need more pampering.

Aging well is a work in progress for me, but I’m doing the basics right. I’m giving myself a good shot at a long and satisfying life. Aging is an adventure. It’s about embracing the changes, learning from the challenges, and celebrating the joys. I’m excited to see how this chapter in my life develops.
