I’m 42, and I can still hear my mother’s voice. “Isn’t that skirt a little tight?” she said to me.

More than two decades have passed, but those six words remain lodged in my memory. I can still picture exactly where I was standing when she said them. The moment stands out in my memory like a photograph. Everything else from that day has faded around the edges, but that exchange remains sharp and unmistakable. I don’t remember what I ate that day, what music was playing in the car, or much of the rest of the afternoon. What I remember is how quickly my excitement disappeared and how those words became the lens through which I saw myself.

More than 20 years later, that moment still lingers, not because of what was said, but because of what it taught me about the power of a mother’s words.

My memory is clear

I was 16 years old, and it was the Saturday before Easter. Like many teenage girls, I was painfully aware of my body. I scrutinized every perceived flaw in the mirror and compared myself to everyone around me. Confidence felt elusive, and most days I walked through the world convinced I didn’t quite measure up.

But that day was different.

After hours of searching at the mall, I found the perfect Easter outfit. The sleeveless lavender top with its boat neckline felt sophisticated and grown-up. It paired so nicely with a plaid skirt in soft shades of blue and purple — the kind that seemed to be in every store in the early 2000s. For the first time in a long while, I felt pretty. More importantly, I felt comfortable in my own skin.

I couldn’t wait to show my mom. I remember carrying my shopping bags through the front door, eager for her reaction. I hurried to my room, changed into the outfit, and walked back out, beaming with pride. Standing in front of her, I waited for her to notice how happy I looked. Instead, she glanced at me and asked, “Isn’t that skirt a little tight?'”

That was it. No, “You look nice.” No, “I can tell you love it.” No acknowledgment of how excited I was. Just one question that immediately shifted my attention from how I felt to how I looked.

That day shaped me

Over the years, I’ve realized that childhood isn’t made up only of big moments. It’s built from thousands of small interactions that quietly shape how we see ourselves. Parents rarely realize which words will stick and which will fade away. A passing remark, spoken without much thought, can become part of a child’s inner voice for decades.

I don’t believe my mother intended to hurt me. In fact, I doubt she gave the comment much thought at all. Becoming a parent has taught me just how easily an offhand remark can slip into an otherwise ordinary moment. Parenting is a constant balancing act of responsibilities, distractions, and worries. We are often answering questions, solving problems, and thinking three steps ahead. In the midst of it all, we don’t always stop to consider how our words might land. Yet what feels insignificant to us can leave a lasting impression on a child.

Children are listening when we think they aren’t. They are assigning meaning to our words. They are deciding who they are based, in part, on what they hear from us.

I’m trying to be aware of my words

As a mother of six, I now find myself pausing in moments that once would have passed unnoticed. I know firsthand how easily a single comment can outlive the day it was spoken.

When one of my children proudly shows me a drawing, a new haircut, or an outfit they picked out themselves, I try to notice their excitement before anything else. Even when I have concerns or suggestions, I remind myself that there may be a better time to share them. The moment they are standing in front of me, looking for connection and affirmation, may not be that time.

I often think about that teenage girl standing in her dream Easter outfit, hoping her mother would see what she saw. What she needed wasn’t fashion advice. She needed to feel seen.

If there’s one lesson that moment taught me, it’s that our words have a remarkable ability to become someone else’s inner voice. As parents, we may never know which comments our children will carry into adulthood. Long after they forget what we bought them, where we took them, or what we accomplished for them, they will still remember how we made them feel. I still do.
