Walgreens Is Closing Stores. How Many in Missouri Have Closed?

Walgreens is closing stores across the country as part of a multiyear downsizing effort, and Missouri is not immune.

Inc., a business news outlet, reported this week that the drugstore chain is closing stores across at least a dozen states as it continues a broader restructuring plan that could ultimately eliminate thousands of stores nationwide.

So which Missouri locations are affected, and what happens to prescriptions when a Walgreens store closes?

Which Walgreens Stores Are Closing in Missouri?

Inc.’s analysis included two St. Louis-area stores.

Bridgeton: 11404 St. Charles Rock Road
St. Louis: 2202 Chambers Road

Both locations were permanently closed earlier this year, with the Bridgeton store shutting down on July 21 and the St. Louis store closing on March 5.

Why Is Walgreens Closing Stores?

Walgreens announced plans to close roughly 1,200 underperforming stores nationwide over three years as part of a turnaround strategy aimed at improving profitability and creating a smaller, more efficient footprint.

The company has said many of the locations targeted for closure no longer fit its long-term business strategy.

What Happens to Prescriptions When a Walgreens Closes?

Walgreens says customers do not need to take any action to transfer their prescriptions to another location, since its pharmacies nationwide have access to customers’ prescription records, insurance information and medication histories.

As such, customers can refill prescriptions at other Walgreens locations or have their prescriptions delivered. The company also said affected customers will be eligible for 90 days of free prescription delivery following the closures.
