Free and discounted items are always a perk when checking out at the grocery store. Even if you have to spend your way up to earn them, you have to grocery shop anyway. Might as well get a little extra from it.
Not every grocery store offers a points-based reward system, so we dug around to find major retailers that do and don’t charge you to join.
Save money while you shop for your home essentials at these retailers.
Kroger
Kroger gives its loyalty members one point for every dollar spent, and that includes qualifying prescriptions. On gift cards, members earn two points for each dollar spent.
For every 100 points accumulated, members can get 10 cents off per gallon of gas at a Kroger fuel center. Or, those 100 points could go toward $1 off a purchase.
Safeway
Members of the Safeway for U loyalty program get one point for every dollar they spend. Accumulating 100 points means $1 off a purchase, but racking up points saves shoppers more.
Redeeming 1,200 points at checkout gets shoppers $20 off their purchases.
With 100 points, a member can get 10 cents off a gallon of gas at a Chevron gas station or $1 off a gallon at a Safeway gas pump. And with 1,000 points, a member can get a max of 20 cents off per gallon at Chevron stations or $1 per gallon at Safeway stations.
Safeway members also get special birthday offers, coupons and meal plans.
Sprouts Farmers Market
Sprouts members get five points for every dollar they spend. Points are then redeemed on a 1,000-point basis in increments of two.
So, 1,000 points equals $2 off, 2,000 points equals $4 off and so on. Shoppers just have to scan the barcode on the app or enter a phone number at checkout to redeem points.
Piggly Wiggly
Piggly Wiggly gives its members Pig Points. The rewards page doesn’t detail how much shoppers must spend to get a Pig Point, but does explain that 100 points equate to $1 off a purchase, 500 points get you $5 off, and 1,000 points get you $10 off.
Registered Pig Points members also get exclusive coupons, and the points expire 90 days after they’re earned.
Albertsons
Albertsons’ loyalty program, like Safeway’s, is called “for U.” Shoppers accumulate one point per dollar. A hundred points can be redeemed for $1 or 10 cents off a gallon of gas. Redeeming 1,200 points gets shoppers $20 off their purchases.
Albertsons for U members also get a birthday treat and a free item every month with a value of up to $10.
Winn-Dixie
Winn-Dixie Rewards members can earn one point for every $2 they spend. Redeeming 100 points earns them $1 off purchases. They’ll also receive a coupon for $5 off a $30 purchase at sign-up, exclusive discounts and a free birthday treat.
Stop & Shop
Stop & Shop gives its members GO Rewards, and simply joining the program adds 500 GO Points to a customer’s account. Otherwise, members accumulate one point per dollar spent.
Certain items will be eligible for additional points from time to time. Stop & Shop GO Points expire on the last day of the month following the one in which shoppers earned them.
GO Points can be used in store or at Stop & Shop and participating Shell gas pumps.
