7 Fun Summer Vacation Spots That Are Shockingly Cheap

News RoomBy News RoomMay 21, 20261 ViewsNo Comments

Vacation inflation isn’t a rumor anymore. It’s official.

Airfares climbed 20.7% in the 12 months ending April 2026, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Lodging is up. Dining out is up. Pretty much every line item that goes into summer vacation costs more than it did a year ago.

That doesn’t mean you’re stuck at home.

It means you have to skip the obvious. Skip the resort towns where most other families are heading. Skip the bucket-list destinations that have priced themselves into the stratosphere.

Instead, go where airfare is cheap, hotels still cost what they should, and a decent dinner doesn’t require a credit card payment plan.

I’ve been writing about money for more than 40 years, and the formula for affordable travel hasn’t changed: Go where other people aren’t going.

Here are seven summer spots most travelers overlook — and where your dollar still buys an actual vacation, not just a few overpriced days of regret.

1. Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

Oklahoma City posts the No. 1 rank in the country for lowest local costs in WalletHub’s 2026 Best Summer Travel Destinations. Hotel rooms, restaurant meals, and gas all clock in cheaper than just about anywhere else in America.

What you do with the savings is the fun part. Visit the Oklahoma City National Memorial — somber, beautifully done, and free for the outdoor portion. Walk Bricktown along the canal. Catch a minor-league baseball game.

See the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, which is worth your time even if you don’t think you care about cowboys.

It’s the kind of city smug coastal travelers laugh at — until they visit and start telling their friends.

2. Cincinnati, Ohio

Cincinnati lands at No. 9 overall on WalletHub’s 2026 ranking and posts a top-10 finish nationally for activities. Translation: There’s a lot to do, very little to pay.

Sit on the riverfront. Catch a Reds game. Eat Skyline Chili at least once — don’t fight it, just go. Cross the Roebling Bridge into Covington for cheaper hotels and equally good food.

Summer weather is warm but not punishing.

3. Knoxville, Tennessee

Forget Gatlinburg. Forget Asheville. Both have been discovered, and the pricing reflects it.

Knoxville sits an hour from the Great Smoky Mountains — the most-visited national park in America and free to enter. Local costs run well below the national average, meaning cheap meals, cheap lodging, and cheap gas.

You get mountain views, river trails, Tennessee whiskey distilleries, and a walkable downtown — at maybe half the price of the tourist towns nearby.

Quick aside — most internet financial advice comes from people who weren’t alive during the last recession. I’ve been writing about money for more than 40 years. Want rock-solid advice? Sign up for the free Money Talks Newsletter. Takes 10 seconds. No fluff. No spam.

4. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Pittsburgh is one of the great American secrets. Three rivers, dozens of bridges, a serious food scene, and museums that would feel at home in cities twice its size.

The Andy Warhol Museum, the Carnegie museums, and the Frick are all within reach. Hotel rates are reasonable, especially compared to Philadelphia or Washington, D.C.

Take the Duquesne Incline up to Mount Washington for one of the best skyline views in the country. It costs just a few bucks.

5. Salt Lake City, Utah

Most people think of Salt Lake City as a winter destination. That’s a mistake.

In summer, it’s a launchpad for some of the most spectacular hiking in the country — five national parks within a day’s drive, plus the Great Salt Lake and the Wasatch peaks right out the back door.

WalletHub ranks Salt Lake City No. 8 overall in 2026, with low travel costs and minimal hassles. Flights are reasonable, and the city itself runs cheap. The dry heat beats Florida humidity, too.

6. San Salvador, El Salvador

This one will raise eyebrows. Stay with me.

El Salvador has gone through one of the most dramatic safety turnarounds in the hemisphere over the past few years. Tourism is booming. And round-trip airfare from major U.S. cities averages around $282, according to a 2026 Skyscanner analysis that placed San Salvador second on its list of cheapest destinations of the year.

You get volcanoes, Pacific beaches, surf towns, Mayan ruins, and food that costs a fraction of what it would in Cancún. Just travel smart, like you would anywhere.

7. Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

If you want a real beach vacation without resort-town pricing, Puerto Vallarta is the answer this summer.

Mexico, the Caribbean, and Canada are dominating affordability rankings for summer 2026, with Puerto Vallarta singled out alongside San Juan and Punta Cana as one of the strongest value destinations. Short-haul international fares are holding steady while European routes spike.

You get beaches, great food, a walkable Old Town, and a peso that still does the heavy lifting against the dollar. A week here will cost you what three nights cost in a Florida resort.

The bottom line

Here’s the truth no travel magazine will admit: The famous destinations have been priced for tourists who don’t care what things cost. If you care — and you should — go somewhere else.

You won’t post the same Instagram shots as everyone else. You’ll just come home with money still in your account, which is a different kind of bragging right.

And honestly? That’s the better one.
