As you narrow down what kind of job you’d like, it’s important to consider that some offer better prospects than others in terms of salary potential and opportunities.

For some insight into which finance career might be best for you, consider job market data from one of the financial capitals of the world: New York City.

In 2025 the city published its 2024 New York City Significant Industry report, and highlighted its top 10 most common financial sector jobs. The report also highlights the average salary for each position, as well as their projected growth rate from 2020 to 2030.

Below, we’ve highlighted the 10 jobs in descending order of their projected growth rates.

General and Operations Managers

What they do: Oversee the finances of a company, manage risks

Projected employment change: +23.0%

Sales Managers

What they do: Oversee a sales team

Projected employment change: +16.2%

Share of industry workforce: 2.6%

Median salary: NA

Accountants and Auditors

What they do: Manage taxes, budgets, and financial statements

Projected employment change: +15.0%

Share of industry workforce: 4.6%

Median salary: $146,746

Personal Financial Advisors

What they do: Provide individual investors with

Projected employment change: +6.1%

Share of industry workforce: 9.1%

Median salary: $179,561

Securities, Commodities, and Financial Services Sales Agents

What they do: Sell financial products and assets

Projected employment change: +3.2%

Share of industry workforce: 18.4%

Median salary: $217,671

Executive Secretaries and Executive Administrative Assistants

What they do: Help with administrative tasks
