I Went to Must-Visit California Wine Region; Sonoma Better Than Napa

News RoomBy News RoomJanuary 7, 20261 ViewsNo Comments

I’ve visited California wine country several times over the past couple of years, including many trips to the iconic Napa Valley.

And although I definitely recommend a trip to Napa, there’s another nearby wine region that I find myself returning to even more often: Sonoma.

More than just the city of Sonoma, the entire county feels like its own world. With rolling vineyards, rugged beaches, and redwood forests, it offers so much more than wine alone. Here’s why this region stole my heart.

Sonoma County is home to a variety of wineries, many of which offer unique experiences

There are more than 425 different wineries in Sonoma County, so if wine tasting is your goal, there are more than enough options to choose from.

The region offers everything from relaxed, walk-in spots to high-end tasting rooms with incredible service and excellent wines.

Sonoma is also home to one of the oldest premium wineries in California, Buena Vista Winery. Here, I’ve enjoyed walking the historic grounds, seeing the old vines, and learning some history while I sip.

Beyond great wine, Sonoma also offers unique tasting experiences. At the historic Bartholomew Estate Winery, for example, guests can enjoy a tasting after horseback riding through the vineyards.

I had a similar adventure at Chalk Hill Winery in Healdsburg, where I paired my tasting with a Hummer ride throughout the estate.

The landscape is highly diverse

Sonoma County is home to a diverse range of landscapes, including vineyards, redwood forests, rivers, and beaches.

I love driving along the dramatic coastline and stopping to hike, or spending a few hours on the sand at Sonoma Coast State Park.

In a single day, I can sip wine, stroll under redwoods, and watch the sun set over the Pacific. In my experience, there aren’t many other places where that’s possible.

The small towns feel magical

Several smaller towns make up Sonoma County, and many of them feel like they were plucked straight from a Hallmark movie.

I love walking and biking through Sonoma’s quiet city streets, and grabbing coffee or fish tacos in Bodega Bay.

I also enjoy celebrating the holidays on the festive square in Healdsburg, and wandering around Guerneville, tucked under the majestic redwoods.

Each town has its own personality, and exploring them feels like moving through different little worlds, all connected by the same relaxed, welcoming energy that makes Sonoma so special.

In my opinion, there’s more room for spontaneity when visiting Sonoma County

Napa is a popular travel destination, and with reservations recommended at many tasting rooms and restaurants, planning is key.

In Sonoma County, however, visitors don’t always need to plan as far in advance, as many restaurants and wineries accept walk-ins.

On a recent trip, I visited Gracianna Winery, Overshine Wine Co., Korbel Winery, and Sonoma Coast Vineyards — none of which required a reservation. Each place offered a distinct experience and insight into the local wine scene.
