Costco is set to open its first standalone gas station by the end of June as the company continues to prioritize fuel.
Mission Viejo, California, about 49 miles from Los Angeles, will be the home of the wholesaler’s first gas station location, according to previous USA TODAY reporting. In March 2025, the city’s Planning and Transportation Commission approved plans for the 40-pump gas station that will rival big-name gas stations.
Robert Schick, a spokesperson for the city, told USA TODAY on Wednesday, March 18 that the company has indicated they’ll open the location in June. It will be Costco’s largest gas station to date.
Costco’s gas has a lower margin when compared to other products, but the company believes the offering drives people into its stores, according to USA TODAY’s previous reporting. Costco memberships range from $65 to $130 annually.
While gas is a popular product from the superstore, it can cause logistical issues at existing locations with long lines and jammed parking lots.
Why Costco’s Gas Stations Are So Popular
“Costco gas is wildly popular with members because of the cheaper prices,” Neil Saunders, a retail analyst at the research and analytics firm GlobalData, previously told USA TODAY.
He added: “If successful, there are other locations where this could be implemented.”
USA TODAY contacted Costco for additional information on the new gas station.
Costco to Open Second Standalone Gas Station
Indeed, Costco is planning to build a second gas station location in Honolulu. A website for the project states that the location will be in the community of Kapālama Kai. Demolition began in October 2025, and the gas station is set to open in 2027.
