  • WalletHub released a ranking of the best cities for jobs in the US.
  • The ranking examined both the job market and socioeconomic factors in 182 US cities.
  • Scottsdale, Arizona, was ranked No. 1, followed by Columbia, Maryland, and Portland, Maine.

The job market is notoriously difficult in 2026, but living in one of these 20 cities could make the search a bit easier.

WalletHub examined a total of 182 US cities — the 150 most populated cities in the country, plus at least two of the most populated cities in each state — to determine the best cities for job seekers in 2026.

It evaluated 31 metrics to score and rank each city in two categories: job market and socioeconomics.

The job market category, which was weighted more heavily, included factors such as job opportunities, unemployment rates, job satisfaction, and access to employee benefits. The socioeconomics category looked at median annual incomes, average work and commute times, housing affordability, and safety.

The study used data from multiple sources, including the US Census Bureau, the US Department of Labor, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Indeed, Glassdoor, The Pew Charitable Trusts, the Council for Community and Economic Research, and Gallup-Sharecare, among others.

“It’s important to look at more than just the number of jobs available or the unemployment rate when determining the best place to find employment,” WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo wrote. “Quality matters just as much as quantity, from the average salaries and benefits to job security and overall satisfaction.”

Out of the 182 US cities WalletHub analyzed, here are the top 20 best places for jobs in 2026.

20. Charleston, West Virginia

Charleston’s job market is ranked 25th out of the 182 cities WalletHub studied. Its socioeconomic factors are ranked 33rd.

19. Boston, Massachusetts

Boston’s job market is ranked 20th, and its socioeconomics rank 48th.

18. Irving, Texas

Irving has one of the best job markets in the US, according to the WalletHub analysis, placing fifth in the ranking. However, its socioeconomic factors rank 137th.

17. Overland Park, Kansas

Overland Park has one of the highest median annual incomes in a five-way tie with other cities, including Columbia, Maryland, and Scottsdale, Arizona. Its job market is ranked 30th overall, and its socioeconomics are ranked 13th.

16. Bismarck, North Dakota

Bismarck’s job market is ranked 37th overall, but its socioeconomic factors are ranked No. 1. thanks to it having the fourth-most affordable housing of the cities examined, according to WalletHub.

15. Lewiston, Maine

Lewiston has the 12th-best job market and 60th-best socioeconomics in WalletHub’s ranking.

14. Chandler, Arizona

The job market in Chandler ranks 19th overall. The city’s socioeconomic ranking is 20th.

13. Salt Lake City, Utah

In Salt Lake City, the job market is ranked 14th and the socioeconomics are ranked 39th.

12. Atlanta, Georgia

Atlanta has the 22nd-best job market and the eighth-best socioeconomic factors out of the US cities WalletHub ranked.

In Huntsville, the job market is ranked ninth, and the socioeconomic factors are ranked 44th.

The nation’s capital boasts the highest monthly average starting salary of any US city, placing its job market ranking at seventh overall. However, it also has the second-longest commute times. Its socio-economic ranking is 43rd.

7. Plano, Texas

Plano’s job market ranks sixth in WalletHub’s analysis. Its socioeconomic ranking is 40th.

5. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Pittsburgh, known for its healthcare, technology, and advanced manufacturing industries, has the most job opportunities of any city in the US, WalletHub found, contributing to its 10th-best overall job market ranking. It also ranks high in socioeconomics with the third-best overall placement.

Portland also has the second-highest percentage of workers whose jobs include access to an employer-based retirement plan, WalletHub found.

Combined with its safety ranking with the 23rd-lowest violent crime rate in the US, Portland comes in as the third-best city for jobs overall.

It has the second-best job market ranking and the 30th highest socioeconomics ranking.
