Pepperoni or cheese pizza? It’s an age-old question. But it’s finally time for pepperoni to shine with a day dedicated to the pizza topping.
Sunday, Sept. 20, marks National Pepperoni Pizza Day, according to the National Day Calendar. The day falls just weeks after National Cheese Pizza Day on Sept. 5.
While pizza is commonly associated with Italian cuisine, the National Day Calendar says it may have originated in ancient Greece. Thousands of years ago, ancient Greeks topped bread with oil and cheese, and many believe this is how pizza got its start. Then the Romans created pizza, topped with cheese and honey, and flavored it with bay leaves.
Today, we add all sorts of toppings: anchovies, pineapple, ham, mushrooms and/or peppers. But Sept. 20 is all about the iconic pepperoni pizza.

Detroit-style combo at Little Caesars: Little Caesars has dropped its latest combo, the Detroit-Style Slices-n-Stix Crave Combo, for $5.99, according to a news release emailed to USA TODAY.
The combo includes:
- Two slices of Detroit-Style Deep Dish Pepperoni pizza
- Four pieces of Italian Cheese Bread
- A 20-ounce beverage
You can purchase the combo at participating locations, though prices may be higher in Alaska, Hawaii and California, as well as at multiple locations in New York, Oregon and Washington.
BOGO pizza at Papa John’s: For a limited time, when customers buy one large pizza, they can get a free one-topping pizza on an Original, Thin or New York Style Crust, according to Papa John’s website.
Pepperoni lovers can also buy a large Ultimate Pepperoni Pizza for $12.99 instead of its regular price of $20.99.
