Didn’t know who Jacob Coxon was a couple of weeks ago? You’re not alone.
As of last week, the 27-year-old former Anthropic and OpenAI researcher has become the poster child for AI panic.
In an X post on Tuesday, Coxon announced his resignation from Anthropic, saying that neither AI lab was “acting responsibly” and both were “gambling with our lives.”
In an interview with The Daily published on Monday, Coxon said he initially wanted to resign without making a statement.
“I’d never posted online before, on Twitter, on public social media,” Coxon said. “So this was kind of my first ever post. But I was like, I guess I should say something.”
The post went viral, drawing more than 171 million views on X and catapulting Coxon from relative obscurity into the role of AI’s latest doomsayer. It also has the makings of a smart career move.
‘He’ll have no shortage of offers’
Lawrence Rosenberg, a London-based communications specialist who focuses on AI leaders, said Coxon’s sudden prominence could make him a highly sought-after hire.
“He’s likely given up a six-figure job, but he’ll have no shortage of offers because he now offers something more than just an AI researcher,” Rosenberg told Business Insider. “Jacob Coxon has a personal brand built around moral conscientiousness.”
Rosenberg said Coxon has quickly established himself as a relatable messenger with a ground-level perspective.
He’s seen as “a real human who’s curbing his personal ambition for the good of you and me,” Rosenberg said.
That “good guy” persona, he said, could make Coxon catnip for companies keen to signal a serious commitment to AI safety.
“Wherever he goes next, his employment screams to the world, ‘these are the good guys,’” Rosenberg added. “That company will get organic coverage that would’ve cost millions in advertising.”
It could give some employers pause, or he could go at it alone
Matthew McGrigor, a recruiter at New York-based tech search firm Worth Search, said Coxon’s public callout of OpenAI and Anthropic could give some employers pause.
“I doubt he would care about that right now,” he said, given how forcefully Coxon has argued against private companies driving the race to superintelligence.
For some researchers leaving frontier labs, the next step is not a move to another commercial AI company, but a career at a mission-led nonprofit. On Thursday, two researchers from Anthropic and Google DeepMind left their safety teams to join METR, a nonprofit research group founded by a former OpenAI researcher.
While Coxon worked in pretraining rather than AI safety, his public stance could still make him an attractive recruit for the growing safety ecosystem. McGrigor predicted that a safety-focused lab would “snap him up within the next few weeks.”
In his interview with The Daily, Coxon said he’d had discussions with Anthropic’s safety teams and considered working with them before he quit.
Coxon could also ultimately choose to go at it alone, building his own safety-focused venture, Kelly Gauthier, managing director at the London-based AI executive-search firm Higher, told Business Insider.
For a new company to be viable, Gauthier said, venture capitalists would need to see a clear investment opportunity. “Safety and governance and growth don’t necessarily go hand in hand, so that will be an important contradiction to resolve,” she said.
A smart career move?
As the debate around the AI apocalypse accelerates, Coxon is not alone in facing a quit-or-stay conundrum. The decision is more complicated than it may seem, as Sarah E. Needleman wrote for Business Insider.
Coxon, who didn’t respond to a request for comment from Business Insider, is not the first tech insider to discover that a public break with a powerful company can be a career accelerator.
Sarah Wynn-Williams turned her time inside Facebook into “Careless People,” a bestselling memoir that made her one of Big Tech’s most prominent public critics.
After Leopold Aschenbrenner was fired by OpenAI in 2024 over an alleged information leak, which he disputes, he went on to publish a viral memo titled “Situational Awareness.” It subsequently became the name of his AI-focused hedge fund, which suffered steep losses over the summer after an initial meteoric rise.
And in 2020, when Timnit Gebru was pushed out of Google’s Ethical AI team, the discourse around her departure made her a big name in AI ethics. So much so that in 2023, she was named to TIME’s list of the world’s 100 most influential people.
There is, of course, a precedent for turning AI-safety concerns into a lucrative business venture: Anthropic itself. It was founded by former OpenAI researchers who wanted to promote AI safety. The Amodeis are now multibillionaires. Anthropic is targeting an IPO in October.
As for Coxon, McGrigor said he’s unlikely to be hard-up in his career after Anthropic.
“He’ll have options,” McGrigor said. “It ultimately comes down to finding an organization whose risk tolerance and mission align with his personal stance.”
