More and more people are finding Dollar Tree’s new price scanners at their locations, as the company continues moving away from its standardized $1 business model.
The reactions on social media have been mixed, with some users suggesting that the discount retailer change its name to “The Tree” and others arguing the system “saves a lot of labor and supply costs.”
Here’s what shoppers should know about the new price scanners at Dollar Tree stores and its ongoing “multi-price journey.”
People Noticing Dollar Tree’s Price Scanners
Over the last week, social media users have been posting about new price scanners at Dollar Tree locations across the country. The system was also highlighted in a segment on Fox 5 Atlanta.
While some customers are just now finding the scanners at their Dollar Tree locations, the machines have existed in some form since at least March 2025, which is when a TikTok user posted a video of a price scanner at her location, calling the discovery “scary.” That TikTok has since garnered more than 139,000 likes as of July 22.
Dollar Tree did not immediately respond to USA TODAY’s request for more information about the expansion of its price scanners on July 22.
Some People ‘Love’ the Scanners
Reactions to the new price scanners were mixed on social media, and some noted that their Dollar Tree locations have had them for a while.
“I’m in New Jersey, and my local DTs (except for one) have had those scanners for quite some time now, and I love them,” wrote one person on a Facebook post. “I scan all my items before checking out, even if the items have a price on them.”
“I think price scanners should be standard in all stores!” added another person on the same post. “You can only scan things at a Walmart using the app and with elderly and some others not everyone wants to use an app or is tech savvy!”
Another commenter argued that without having to price each item individually, the stores can save on labor and supply costs.
A ‘Mini-Walmart’
Other social media users were less than impressed with both the scanners and Dollar Tree’s increasing costs.
“How about good old fashioned price tags,” wrote one person over on Instagram, adding, “Good grief.”
“Why do I need a scanner in a dollar tree?” asked another. “It’s only like 5-8 short rows, I can just walk to the aisle where the item is, it’s not a Walmart where I have to walk a couple of minutes to find where the item is.”
Someone else referred to the company as “Dollar Branch,” while another compared it to a “mini-Walmart.”
Dollar Tree’s ‘Multi-Price Journey’
In December, USA TODAY reported that the discount retailer’s $1.25 baseline price had been upped to $1.50 on a growing number of key items, with prices on other goods going for as much as $10.
A portion of that strategy, referred to as the “multi-price journey,” was detailed in a Dollar Tree presentation from Chief Merchandising Officer Rick McNeely. Going into 2024, the company identified numerous categories that could benefit from higher prices, including seasonal goods, home décor and electronics, as well as health care, baby and pet products.
The presentation noted that the multi-price strategy was initially launched as part of the company’s in-store “Dollar Tree Plus” concept, before becoming a “core part” of its strategy.
Customer insights, McNeely’s presentation stated, informed Dollar Tree’s decision to introduce price points above $1.25. That included analyzing “customer shopping behaviors to find out where they shopped and what they were buying after shopping at Dollar Tree.”
“Data from the millions of transactions tracked by our proprietary data provider revealed that Dollar Tree shoppers were spending over 90% of their wallet outside Dollar Tree, with an average unit retail of $3.93,” the presentation states, adding, “After they shopped at Dollar Tree, approximately 90% of purchases made at competitive retailers were priced over $3.”
‘The People Have Power Too’
The strategy reflects other commenters’ replies on the Instagram post about the new price scanners.
“If I get to the register and the item is not $1.25, I have the cashier take it off my receipt and put it back,” one person wrote. “Nice try corporate. Don’t buy stuff over the dollar and they will have to give up on selling it! The people have power too.”
“I absolutely refuse on principle,” added another. “I to this day will not pay for anything in there over $2. It’s not because I can’t, it’s just because I think it’s greed. I don’t think their products are costing them more. They, the customer, will complain and still buy it. They will be the master of their own demise.”
