The 2026 Hyundai Kona Is Affordable, Modern and Fun to Drive

News RoomBy News RoomAugust 26, 20263 ViewsNo Comments

I drove the South Korean Hyundai Kona subcompact SUV for a week for USA TODAY Cars. I was a fan of the previous Kona generation, and the 2024 model year redesign makes it even more appealing, modernizing its exterior and adding great standard tech.

I was surprised by how sophisticated the SUV has become in its most recent iteration, deviating from its original quirky design. Here’s what drivers should know about the 2026 Hyundai Kona, from its pricing to its specs, standard features and major rivals.

What Stands Out About the 2026 Hyundai Kona?

The 2026 Hyundai Kona stands out because it’s sleek, futuristic and value-oriented. It doesn’t break the bank and it’s a practical daily driver for singles, couples and even drivers with small families thanks to generous back seat space.

I’ve driven the first-generation Hyundai Kona and enjoyed its go-kart-like handling. The South Korean SUV’s second generation feels more mature, composed and refined, from its appearance to its driving dynamics.

Performance, Handling and Efficiency

Hyundai’s Kona subcompact SUV has a quiet cabin and a smooth ride. Its steering is light and it’s easy to maneuver. The Kona isn’t powerful or quick, but the optional turbocharged engine provides a pleasant boost for driving enthusiasts.

The 2026 Hyundai Kona uses a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine to produce 147 horsepower. It earns 29 miles per gallon in the city and 34 miles per gallon on the highway. The turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine provides 190 horsepower.

Interior, Tech and Comfort

The 2026 Kona has a simple, tech-centric interior. It comes standard with a 12.3-inch infotainment system.

The Kona’s cabin is modern and uncluttered, prioritizing space and functionality over pizzazz. It’s comfortable enough for daily tasks and comes standard with dual front USB outlets, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and a 4.2-inch digital instrument cluster.

Will the 2026 Hyundai Kona Fit Your Lifestyle?

The 2026 Hyundai Kona is 171.3 inches long, 71.9 inches wide without mirrors and 62.2 inches tall. It has 25.5 cubic feet of cargo space.

Hyundai’s Kona will fit your lifestyle if you’re a commuter or have a small family. Its cabin is spacious for its segment.

The 2026 Kona has 38.2 inches of rear legroom. It isn’t the best option for adult carpooling, but the SUV offers adequate space for young families and car seats.

Price, Value and Competitors

The 2026 Hyundai Kona starts at $25,500. It comes in four trims.

2026 Hyundai Kona trims:

  • Kona SE: $25,500
  • Kona SEL Sport: $26,825
  • Kona Premium: $28,425
  • Kona Limited: $32,535

Hyundai’s subcompact SUV delivers solid value for the money. Upper trims offer more features for prices that are still attractive. I tested the Limited final trim and enjoyed its many add-ons, including the larger 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a surround-view monitor and H-Tex leatherette-trimmed seating surfaces.

The Kona competes against popular subcompact SUV models like the Mazda CX-30 and Honda HR-V. The Kona is the most affordable of the trio and has the largest displays. Honda’s subcompact SUV is the roomiest of the three.

Mazda’s CX-30 has the most powerful engine option and is the sportiest option for drivers.

Who Should Buy the 2026 Hyundai Kona?

The 2026 Hyundai Kona is best for budget-conscious drivers who want a roomy subcompact SUV with great tech features. It’s also a great option for first-time car buyers because of its low starting price.

The Kona is agile, easy to park and boasts solid fuel economy numbers. I enjoyed testing the Limited trim, but I would personally opt for the SEL Sport since it adds desirable features like heated front seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and wireless device charging without breaking the bank.

Subcompact SUVs like the Kona are perfect for drivers who value cargo and rear seat space, but still want an affordable vehicle that’s easy to maneuver and fun to drive.
