The 10 British universities with the most American students, ranked

News RoomBy News RoomAugust 17, 20268 ViewsNo Comments

Some American students are swapping Greek life and GPAs for cobblestone campuses and a degree across the pond.

Awareness of the British university route is steadily rising, said Meredith Guthrie, lead consultant at Meritage Advisors, a consultancy that provides UK university admissions guidance for prospective American students.

“The application process for UK universities is seen as refreshingly transparent compared to the pressure cooker students go through for US colleges,” Guthrie told Business Insider.

College admissions in the UK are more interested in academic aptitude than in your personal journey or extracurriculars. The courses are also subject-specific, and many of them can be completed in three years, she added.

The following ranking — which spotlights British schools with the most American students — has been compiled from data published by the UK Higher Education Statistics Agency. The data covers the 2024-25 academic year, across all levels of full-time study.

It accounts for students with a permanent address in the US, rather than those with an American nationality. It also accounts for all higher education providers, not just universities.

Here are the 10 British universities with the most American students.

10. Royal Veterinary College

Number of US-domiciled, full-time students: 490

Established in 1791, the Royal Veterinary College is a specialist vet school and a member institution of the University of London. It was ranked the best in the world for veterinary science by the QS World University Rankings.

The RVC, whose royal patron is King Charles III, has one campus in London and another further in the Hertfordshire countryside.

9. University of the Arts London

Number of US-domiciled, full-time students: 530

With an alumni list featuring countless famous names from Alexander McQueen to Jimmy Choo, the University of the Arts London is bound to attract Americans who dream of making it big in the creative industries.

UAL is split into several constituent colleges, including Central Saint Martins, the Camberwell College of Arts, and the Chelsea College of Arts.

8. King’s College London

Number of US-domiciled, full-time students: 565

King’s College London is considered one of the most prestigious universities in the UK and offers a wide array of courses, from dentistry to war studies.

It has five campuses across London, including the Strand Campus, which is close to the Houses of Parliament and the River Thames.

7. London School of Economics and Political Science

Number of US-domiciled, full-time students: 710

Founded in 1895, the London School of Economics and Political Science topped the Times and Sunday Times’ 2026 UK university league table.

It was founded for the “betterment of society” and is world-renowned for its study and research in the social sciences.

6. University of Cambridge

Number of US-domiciled, full-time students: 725

Founded in 1209, the University of Cambridge is considered one of the world’s most prestigious universities.

With 126 Nobel Prizes awarded to its members, Cambridge has been home to major scientific breakthroughs, including the discovery of DNA’s double helix structure. The university says it welcomes “talented students from around the world.”

5. University College London

Number of US-domiciled, full-time students: 735

University College London is one of the top universities in the world, according to the 2027 QS World University Rankings.

It offers over 400 undergraduate degree courses, and over 700 postgraduate research and taught degree courses.

4. University of Glasgow

Number of US-domiciled, full-time students: 990

The University of Glasgow was founded in 1451 and has many influential alumni, such as the economist Adam Smith, who pioneered modern economics.

Meredith Guthrie, lead consultant at Meritage Advisors, said Glasgow’s “impressive position in international league tables and metropolitan location will have an effect on driving interest to potential applicants.”

3. University of Oxford

Number of US-domiciled, full-time students: 1,250

The University of Oxford has long ranked among the world’s top universities and was named the world’s best university by Times Higher Education for a 10th consecutive year in its 2026 rankings.

The oldest university in the English-speaking world, it attracts the best and brightest from around the globe.

2. University of Edinburgh

Number of US-domiciled, full-time students: 1,445

Founded in 1583, the University of Edinburgh has been the birthplace of scientific breakthroughs such as the discovery of chloroform’s use in childbirth and the cloning of Dolly the Sheep.

Like other Scottish universities, it offers four-year undergraduate courses — the same length as an American bachelor’s degree — which, as a result, “attracts significant US interest,” Guthrie said.

1. University of St. Andrews

Number of US-domiciled, full-time students: 2,200

With around one in five students at St. Andrews coming from the US, the university has become known for its popularity with Americans.

Founded in 1413, St. Andrews is strong academically and has an active campus life characterized by traditions and a tight-knit community.

“St. Andrews has done a phenomenal job in their outreach to American students,” Guthrie said. “There is also prestige. St. Andrews is recognizably elite.”
