Tesla’s second Roadster reveal is getting rained out.
The automaker said Monday it had made the “difficult decision” to postpone Thursday’s outdoor unveiling because of severe weather conditions.
Tesla is rumored to be hosting the event near Waco, Texas — which is expecting thunderstorms and a 90% chance of rain on Thursday, according to The Weather Channel.
The event is now scheduled for October 15.
The original Roadster was Tesla’s first car: a battery-powered sports car built on a heavily modified Lotus Elise skeleton. Tesla stopped selling it in 2012.
Musk unveiled a prototype of its successor in 2017 and said it would enter production in 2020. The automaker promised an electric sports car that sprinted to 60 MPH in just 1.9 seconds, a top speed of around 250 MPH, and more than 600 miles in range.
Tesla began accepting reservations requiring deposits of $50,000 to $250,000, but the company has repeatedly missed its targets for the car. Musk thanked its “long-suffering” deposit holders on a 2024 earnings call.
Much of the delay has been tied to Tesla’s shift in focus, away from traditional car sales and toward more concentration on autonomy and AI. Musk has also teased a SpaceX collaboration that could give the Roadster cold-gas thrusters — “rocket-y stuff,” as he put it — that could briefly lift the car into the air.
