Meta memo reveals what its new ‘Hatch’ AI agent can do, from booking a restaurant to finding a dog sitter

It can DJ. It can order food. It can book you a table at a restaurant. And of course, it can access your Instagram.

These are some things Meta says its coming AI agent can do, according to an internal memo seen by Business Insider.

Known internally as “Project Hatch,” the new agent is Meta’s answer to OpenClaw, the autonomous AI assistant that went viral earlier this year as companies increasingly bet on AI capable of performing tasks rather than just answering queries.

A product manager told staff in an internal channel last month that Hatch was being made available to employees outside its Meta Superintelligence Labs group for testing.

The memo described Hatch as “a personal agent that’s always working on your behalf to help achieve your goals and improve your life, your health, your relationships, your personal finances and more.”

The memo to staff included a list of things Hatch could do. “It has its own computer so it can do anything you can do online, like filling out forms, buying something, or performing deep research,” it said, in a section titled “What makes Project Hatch different from an AI assistant?”

Meta is positioning Hatch as a general consumer product capable of performing a range of computer-based tasks, at a time when generalist agents are taking off. Google launched a similar tool, Gemini Spark, earlier this year, while OpenAI and Anthropic also have agents capable of controlling users’ computers. A new AI assistant from the startup Instinct, which users can call or text, has also generated buzz in recent weeks.

Hatch could become a new way for Meta to make money from its AI investments. While the company has been working to catch rivals with new models and a new coding agent, its AI revenue has mostly come from improvements to its advertising products.

It could not be learned what Meta plans to charge for Hatch or an exact launch timeline. The Information previously reported that Meta plans to launch Hatch in the next few weeks and that it has considered charging up to $200 a month for it.

A Meta spokesperson declined to comment.

Meta wants to crack the AI agent market

The memo said Hatch can connect directly to apps such as email and calendar, and gave Spotify, Instagram, and OpenTable as examples.

“It has great memory and can remember more than most AIs,” the memo read, adding that users can “approve any sensitive actions” before they happen.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has previously touted his vision of a future in which everyone has their own personal AI assistants capable of performing tasks.

“Meta is the company primarily focused on building personal superintelligence for everyone,” he said in a manifesto earlier this month.

The memo said that Hatch would be highly personal to the user.

“You design your agent, so no two are alike. You name it, shape how it talks and decide what it pays attention to. If it gets something wrong, tell it and it adjusts,” the memo said.

The product manager who posted the note said they had built a Hatch agent named Veda that had helped them find a new dog sitter, purchase a Father’s Day gift, and change their sleep habits.

Hatch also works in the background “even when the app is closed,” the memo added.
