Inside the world’s largest college dorm, a 1.4 million-square-foot Naval Academy building with over 4,600 beds and its own ZIP code

Bancroft Hall at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, is named for former Navy Secretary George Bancroft, but to the midshipmen who call the dormitory home, it is affectionately known as “Mother B.”

The largest single college dormitory in the world, Bancroft Hall, houses all roughly 4,400 midshipmen throughout their four years of study at the elite military academy.

Bancroft Hall’s center section and first two wings, designed by Ernest Flagg, a Beaux-Arts architect known for his grand, classical designs, were completed in 1908. The dormitory was expanded in 1921, 1941, and 1961 and now features eight wings.

The enormous 1.4-million-square-foot complex houses 1,639 dorm rooms and 4,663 beds, and contains 33 acres of floor space and 4.8 miles of hallways, which midshipmen refer to by their maritime term, “passageways.” The dorm is so big that its internal post office uses the unique ZIP code, 21412.

Incoming freshmen, known as “plebes,” march into Bancroft Hall through the center doors after their Oath of Office Ceremony on Induction Day, the first official day of Plebe Summer before the academic year begins. From then on, midshipmen are not permitted to walk through the center doors until after graduation. (Civilians, officers, and non-midshipmen are allowed to use the center doors.)

The front doors of Bancroft Hall open into a decorative rotunda accessible to visitors. Memorial Hall, a space honoring fallen alumni of the US Naval Academy, is publicly accessible through the staircase in the rotunda.

Bancroft Hall also features student services, including gyms, a uniform store, a bookstore, a tailor, a cobbler, laundry rooms, and dental and medical facilities.

The greater Bancroft Hall complex also includes Mitscher Hall, located in the courtyard, which houses an auditorium and a small chapel. The Levy Center inside Mitscher Hall includes a synagogue, conference rooms, and the Honor Court, a midshipman-led body that investigates alleged violations of the USNA Honor Concept.

Midshipmen keep their dorm rooms shipshape

Attending the US Naval Academy requires adherence to strict rules, including in the dorms. Uniforms and shoes must be stored in order from light to dark, and beds must be neatly made with hospital corners each day. Rooms are also inspected regularly.

The rooms, housing at least two people, are single-sex. Each room includes a twin bed above a desk, a closet, storage, and its own shower and sink. Communal toilets are located in the halls. The dormitory is co-ed. As of 2024, the student body was around 70% male and 30% female.

Rooming assignments are organized by the roughly 150-person companies that midshipmen are placed in upon arrival. The companies also eat and study together, and compete for points each semester that earn special distinctions.

Meals are served in King Hall, which was completed in 1953 and is located within Bancroft Hall. At breakfast, lunch, and dinner, the Naval Academy serves 4,500 meals at once in less than 10 minutes — enough for virtually every midshipman to eat at the same time. In total, it serves 13,500 meals a day.

Aside from housing the entire student body, Bancroft Hall’s most important role, US Naval Academy public affairs officer Lieutenant Commander Kara Handley told Business Insider, is shaping future leaders.

“For over 120 years, the US Naval Academy has built warfighters behind the doors of Bancroft Hall,” Handley said. “Serving as the structural heart of the Yard, Bancroft Hall not only houses the Brigade of Midshipmen as the largest, single dormitory complex in the world but also provides a training ground to reinforce military discipline, unit cohesion, high standards, and accountability.”
