Girl Scouts Are Selling Dog Cookies Now. The Shipping Costs More Than the Troop Earns.

News RoomBy News RoomSeptember 11, 20262 ViewsNo Comments

The Girl Scouts just announced a cookie for your dog.

I’m not made of stone. My first reaction was the same as everyone else’s, which is that this is delightful and I want one for a dog I don’t currently own.

My second reaction, after 35 years of reading fine print for a living, was to go read the fine print.

It’s worth doing.

What’s actually new

On Sept. 8, Girl Scouts of the USA unveiled two additions to the 2027 lineup. Patch Pals are soft-baked, blueberry muffin-flavored cookies for dogs, made with BARK, the company behind BarkBox. Each one is stamped with one of four patch designs.

The other is Girl Scout Sparkables — a crunchy oatmeal cookie with chocolate chips and sprinkles, developed with Partake. It’s the organization’s first allergy-friendly cookie, made in a facility built to avoid the nine major food allergens. It’s also gluten-free and vegan.

That second one matters. Families who’ve spent years watching their kid sit out cookie season finally get a seat at the table.

Both go on sale Jan. 12, 2027.

Here’s the catch

You can’t buy either one from a kid at a folding table outside the grocery store.

Both cookies are available online only through the Girl Scout cookie website with direct shipping. That’s not a preference. It’s the only way to get them.

And Girl Scout shipping isn’t free.

Last season’s rates ran $11.99 for four to eight packages and $13.99 for nine to 12, with a four-package minimum on any shipped order. Living in Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico or an APO address? Add $5.

The Girl Scouts haven’t published 2027 shipping rates yet. But unless something changes dramatically, that’s your ballpark.

Now run the math

Girl Scout cookie prices aren’t set nationally. Each of the 111 local councils prices its own, which is why a box runs $6 to $7 depending on where you live.

For the new cookies, some councils have already posted numbers. Girl Scouts of Western New York listed Sparkables at $7 a package and Patch Pals at $9, according to Fast Company.

So the dog cookie starts 50% above a regular box before you’ve paid a dime to move it.

Four packages of Patch Pals: $36. Add $11.99 to ship. You’re at $47.99 — roughly $12 a package.

That’s double what a box of Thin Mints costs from a kid on the sidewalk. For your dog.

Quick heads-up — companies spend billions figuring out how to separate you from your money. I’ve spent my career exposing those tricks. Sign up for the free Money Talks Newsletter and keep more of what you earn. 10 seconds, no spam, ever.

The part that bothers me

Here’s where it stops being cute.

Troops don’t keep the $6. They keep a slice of it, and the slice is thin.

Girl Scouts of Colorado pays troops 95 cents per package, rising to a dollar for high-volume sellers. Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay pays 95 cents standard. Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania runs a sliding scale from 90 cents up to $1.25 for the biggest sellers.

Call it a buck a box.

So on that four-package order, the troop earns something like $4. The shipping company gets $11.99.

You paid roughly three times as much to move the cookies as the girls earned selling them.

To be fair, the Girl Scouts frame that fee as part of the support — their own site says paying shipping helps girls do more with their cookie earnings. I’d love to see the receipts on that one. And I don’t yet know whether troops earn their normal cut on these two partner-branded items at all.

Why they’re doing this

This isn’t greed. It’s math.

Girl Scouts reported 1.88 million girl members in its 2015 annual report. A decade later, that’s just over 1 million, per the 2025 report. Fewer girls mean fewer sellers and fewer boxes.

Meanwhile, in-person selling has gotten harder and membership dues have climbed.

So the organization is doing what struggling brands do: partnering up, going direct-to-consumer and reaching for higher price points. Raspberry Rally was the first online-only cookie back in 2022. It’s since been discontinued.

Understandable? Sure. Something you should walk into with your eyes open? Also yes.

How to buy without getting soaked

If you want the new cookies, buy them. Just be smart about it.

  • Go in with friends. The shipping fee is flat per tier. One 12-package order split four ways beats four separate minimum orders.
  • Buy the classics in person. Thin Mints from a booth cost $6 and carry zero shipping. Save the online order for the cookies you can’t get any other way — and if you’re deciding what’s worth the calories, here’s how Consumer Reports ranked the lineup.
  • Add a donation instead of padding your cart. Donated cookies don’t carry shipping costs.
  • Skip the resellers. Every season these show up on eBay at double the price, and none of that money reaches a troop.
  • Check your own council’s price first. They vary by more than you’d think.

And if paying to ship things is a recurring line item for you, there are plenty of ways to stop doing it everywhere else.

The bottom line

A cookie for dogs is a fine idea, and an allergy-friendly cookie is a genuinely good one. I’m glad both exist.

But “available exclusively online” is a phrase that costs you money, and it’s the phrase nobody put in the headline. Twelve dollars a package for dog treats is a choice you’re allowed to make. Just make it knowing what it is.

Your dog, for the record, will be thrilled with a plain old biscuit. Especially given what the rest of that dog already costs you.
