Everyone says software is dead. SaaS startup Linear just doubled its valuation to $2.5 billion.

News RoomBy News RoomAugust 26, 20267 ViewsNo Comments

Artificial intelligence was supposed to kill software-as-a-service. Linear didn’t get the memo.

The startup behind a popular product management tool has doubled its valuation to $2.5 billion and surpassed $100 million in annual recurring revenue, defying the ongoing narrative that AI will make traditional software companies obsolete.

“I think the narrative is always overly generalized that every SaaS company is dying or it’s not relevant anymore,” Linear cofounder and CEO Karri Saarinen told Business Insider. “I think it probably depends a lot on what type of SaaS company you are.”

Linear completed an employee tender offer at a $2.5 billion valuation, with Accel leading the deal, with participation from existing investor 01A and new investors Salesforce Ventures and S32.

The transaction is a secondary sale, meaning $99 million went to employees rather than Linear’s balance sheet. It also doubles the $1.25 billion valuation Linear reached in a Series C funding round led by Accel last year.

Linear’s growth is emerging as a counterpoint to one of Silicon Valley’s biggest debates: whether AI agents will replace SaaS companies or simply change what they do.

For Linear, the argument is that AI creates more work to organize rather than eliminating the need for its product. The company’s software is designed to give teams and, increasingly, AI agents a common place to plan product work, assign tasks, and track what gets built. Still, Linear’s bet rests on the idea that companies will continue to pay for an intermediary layer between people, agents, and the code they produce.

“It’s really a human coordination problem,” Saarinen said, adding that many companies have turned to Linear to track spending on AI tokens. “It justifies the spend against something meaningful for the company.”

Cash-flow positive

Saarinen says Linear does not need the new cash to fund its operations because it has been profitable since its second year and remains cash-flow positive, a rare position for a high-growth startup.

Instead, the tender offer is mostly a retention tool to fend off competition.

“Today, the talent market is very tough,” he said. “There are public companies that have equity programs and large AI companies that are also offering quite high compensation packages, so this is one of our ways to retain people.”

Linear’s 40,000 paying customers include OpenAI, Salesforce, Cursor, Coinbase, Figma, Ramp, Yahoo, and Oscar Health. However, it is operating in an increasingly crowded market. Beyond the wave of AI-native coding and productivity startups trying to automate more of developers’ work, it competes with entrenched software companies such as Atlassian, whose Jira product remains a default project-management tool at many large companies. Other competitors include Asana, Monday.com, and Notion.
