Back-to-School Shopping Gets Expensive. Here’s How Families Can Save

News RoomBy News RoomAugust 29, 20267 ViewsNo Comments

Back-to-school shopping can add up quickly. Between school supplies, clothes, backpacks, calculators and electronics, families often spend hundreds of dollars before the first day of class.

The good news is that a little planning can help stretch your budget and make shopping less stressful. Whether you’re browsing store aisles or shopping online, taking a few extra steps can help you find the best value while avoiding costly mistakes.

Start With a Budget and a List

Before heading to the store or filling an online shopping cart, decide how much you want to spend. Talk with your children about what they truly need and make a shopping list before you leave home.

Having a plan helps you stay focused and reduces the temptation to make impulse purchases. Shopping earlier in the season can also give you a better selection and help you avoid the last-minute rush.

Compare Prices Before You Buy

Not every retailer offers the same price on school supplies or electronics. Take a few minutes to compare prices online and in stores, look for digital coupons, and sign up for retailer email alerts if they offer discounts.

If your state offers a tax-free shopping weekend, consider planning larger purchases around those dates. For expensive items like laptops or tablets, research the product carefully and make sure it meets your child’s school’s technology requirements before making a purchase.

Look for Extra Ways to Save

Many retailers offer student discounts, loyalty rewards, rebates or special promotions during back-to-school season. Don’t be afraid to ask if discounts are available, especially on larger purchases.

If you’re buying supplies that classrooms use throughout the year, consider teaming up with other families to purchase items in bulk and split the cost. You can also check with local schools, nonprofits and community organizations to learn about school supply drives that provide free or low-cost supplies to families.

Shop Safely Online

Online shopping is convenient, but it’s also a busy season for scammers. Be cautious of advertisements that appear in social media feeds or search results offering unbelievable prices on popular products.

Rather than clicking on an ad, type the retailer’s web address directly into your browser to ensure you’re shopping on a legitimate website. Before making a purchase, confirm the website includes secure checkout, review the return policy, and look for contact information in case you need assistance after the sale.

Whenever possible, pay with a credit card. Credit cards generally provide stronger consumer protections if there’s a problem with your order.

Check Return Policies Before You Check Out

School needs sometimes change after classes begin. A different clothing size, the wrong calculator or an electronic device that doesn’t meet classroom requirements may need to be exchanged. Before making your purchase, review the store’s return and exchange policy so there are no surprises if you need to make a return.

Shop With Confidence

Back-to-school shopping doesn’t have to be overwhelming. By setting a budget, comparing prices, planning ahead and shopping with trusted retailers, you can save money while helping your children start the school year prepared for success. A little preparation today can help your family avoid unnecessary expenses and enjoy a smoother start to the new school year.
