5 Car Maintenance Myths Experts Have Busted

News RoomBy News RoomAugust 15, 20263 ViewsNo Comments

You’ve probably heard the old saw that you need to change your oil every 3,000 miles to keep your car running smoothly. Except now most modern cars can go as much as 5,000 miles between oil changes.

Long-time drivers’ heads are probably filled with such rigid rules they learned when they first put their hands on the wheel of a car. But the world, and the car industry, have changed.

And with new car prices approaching $50,000, many owners want to keep their vehicles running smoothly as long as possible.

With that in mind, the USA TODAY Cars team took a look at some common car-maintenance myths that have been busted by experts at the AAA Auto Club.

Myth 1: You Have to Change Your Oil Every 3,000 Miles

3,000 miles or three months was the gold standard for oil changes for years. So much so, in fact, that AAA said 45% of respondents to one of its recent surveys said they still believed it. But the organization said most modern engine oils contain lubricants and additives that extend their life. Because of that, most cars built in the past decade recommend oil changes every 5,000 to 7,000 miles, according to AAA.

Myth 2: Your Car’s Battery Has to Last at Least 5 Years

AAA said 42% of its survey respondents believed every car battery would last at least five years. But the group said batteries can falter in as little as three years of use. AAA said driving habits and climate are big factors in determining how long a car battery will last.

Myth 3: You Have to Service Your Car at a Dealership to Maintain Its Warranty

AAA said 31% of its poll respondents believed they had to get their cars serviced only at authorized dealerships to maintain their warranties. But the group said car owners can get their vehicles serviced wherever they want. It recommends keeping documentation of any work done in case you ever need it for a future warranty claim.

Myth 4: You Don’t Have to Change Your Brake Fluid

AAA said 19% of respondents believed their brake fluid never needed to be changed. However, the group notes that most car manufacturers recommend replacing brake fluid every two to three years. Doing so is important because brake fluid attracts and absorbs water, which can damage internal brake systems and parts.

Myth 5: You Can Wait to Replace Your Tires

Many people believe they can wait until a tire’s tread gets as low as 2/32 inches before replacing it. But AAA said you should actually replace tires at 4/32 inches because their performance deteriorates significantly at that point. Tires below that point will need additional stopping room, increasing the risk of a crash, the group said.
