14 Secret Costco Perks That Pay for Your Membership Fee

News RoomBy News RoomSeptember 23, 20260 ViewsNo Comments

Your Costco membership costs $65 a year for Gold Star or Business, or $130 for Executive. For most people, that fee disappears after a few trips to the bulk aisle.

But here’s something every Costco shopper should know: The warehouse giant has built an ecosystem of services most members never touch.

I’m talking about travel deals, prescription discounts, insurance quotes, free tire service, and cut-rate doctor visits. Used together, even a handful of these can wipe out your annual fee and then some.

Here are under-the-radar Costco perks that turn your membership from a grocery pass into one of the best bargains in your wallet.

1. The 2% Executive reward

If you’re an Executive member paying $130, Costco pays you back 2% on nearly everything you buy, up to $1,250 a year.

Spend around $3,250 annually at Costco and the reward covers the $65 upgrade entirely. Anything above that is profit, up to the $1,250 limit, mailed to you as a certificate that you can apply toward in-store purchases.

Here’s the kicker: If you fall short, Costco refunds the difference when you downgrade. You can’t lose.

2. Gas that pays for the membership

Costco’s fuel prices routinely beat competitors. Costco gas stations often undercut nearby stations by 10 to 30 cents a gallon, and members get exclusive access.

For a typical two-car household burning hundreds of gallons a year, that’s easily $100 to $270 back in your pocket. Many members recoup the entire $65 fee at the pump before buying a single rotisserie chicken.

3. Prescription prices that embarrass your insurance

The Costco Member Prescription Program (CMPP) offers dramatic savings on generic and brand-name drugs — no insurance required. According to BGR, Costco Pharmacy offers up to 80% off prescriptions and popular medicines through the CMPP.

Even people with solid insurance sometimes find Costco’s cash price beats their copay. It’s worth a five-minute phone call to your nearest warehouse before your next refill — and for more ideas, here are ways to save on prescription drugs.

4. Eye exams and glasses without the high markup

Costco Optical sells prescription frames, contact lenses, and progressive lenses at prices most retailers can’t touch. Eye exams typically run $70 to $90, and frames plus lenses often come in well under what you’d pay at LensCrafters or a similar chain.

One member told Upworthy they walked out with two pairs of glasses with progressive lenses, including a polarized pair in the exact tint they wanted, in name-brand frames for under $450.

5. Costco Travel, where vacations come with bonus Shop Cards

Costco Travel books cruises, hotels, rental cars, and full international packages. Packages typically include accommodations and transportation, and members can expect to save hundreds of dollars while enjoying additional perks.

One member who booked a Costa Rica trip reported getting a $200 Shop Card after returning home. That’s more than three years of membership, refunded in a single trip.

6. Car discounts through the Costco Auto Program

The Costco Auto Program connects members to local, pre-vetted dealers offering prearranged pricing on new and used vehicles. You skip the haggling, and the savings often run into the thousands.

Buy one car through the program and you’ve covered roughly a decade of membership fees in a single transaction. It’s one purchase that will pay for your Costco membership many times over.

7. Free tire maintenance for life

If you buy your tires at Costco, rotation and balancing services are free for the life of the tires, and the tire center will also check and adjust tire pressure and repair flat tires for no cost.

Most shops charge $49 to $72 for a rotation and another $37 to $55 for balancing. Skip those fees twice a year and you’ve covered the membership. Learn about more things Costco members can get for free.

8. The Costco Anywhere Visa card by Citi

Members get exclusive access to this no-annual-fee credit card. Cardholders earn up to 5% cash back on gas purchases at Costco, and up to 4% back on other eligible gas purchases, for a combined cap of $7,000 per year. There’s also 3% cash back on restaurants and eligible travel, 2% at Costco itself, and 1% on everything else.

Stack the card rewards on top of Costco’s already-low gas prices and you’re basically getting paid to fill your tank.

9. Discounted gift cards for restaurants and entertainment

Costco regularly sells gift cards at a built-in discount. You’ll often see $100 worth of restaurant credit selling for around $80 — an instant 20% discount on money you were going to spend anyway.

Selection rotates and popular chains sell out fast, so scan the gift card aisle on every visit. Movie theater passes are frequently in the mix too.

10. Virtual doctor visits starting at $29

Through Costco’s partnership with Sesame, members access telehealth at prices that make urgent care clinics look silly. BGR reports members can access virtual primary care for as low as $29, basic health checkups for around $72, mental health therapy sessions at $79, and a weight loss program at $179 for three months.

No insurance needed, no surprise bills. If you’ve ever paid $150 for a quick telehealth visit, this one perk alone can pay for your membership several times over.

11. Home, auto and pet insurance discounts

Costco partners with major insurers to pass savings to members. Figo Pet Insurance offers a 15% discount for Gold Star and Business members, while Executive members receive 15% off plus lost pet recovery services, and in some states new policyholders may receive a $25 digital Costco Shop Card upon enrollment.

Home and auto coverage is available through American Family, and term life runs through Protective Life. One insurance quote comparison can justify the fee.

12. Free hearing tests and low-cost hearing aids

Warehouses with a hearing aid center offer free hearing tests to Costco members by appointment, with testing taking place in a private sound booth.

If you buy hearing aids there, you also get free follow-up care, loss and damage coverage, warranties on select models, and hearing aid cleanings and checkups. Private audiology practices charge hundreds for the same service bundle.

13. Service discounts

Moving soon? Warehouse members can receive a 25% discount from Budget Truck. One cross-town move clears the membership fee outright.

14. The risk-free 100% money-back guarantee

Here’s the most underrated perk on the list. Costco has an option to cancel your membership and receive a refund if you’re dissatisfied. No expiration date. No fine print trap.

That means your $65 isn’t really a fee at all. It’s a refundable deposit you can walk away from anytime.

The bottom line

Most members use only a fraction of what they’re paying for. Pick three or four perks from this list and the membership pays for itself before the calendar year is half over.

The real mistake isn’t the $65 fee. It’s leaving the rest of the card’s value sitting on the shelf.
